Well we are in the middle of what the media have christened the "Super Lunar Eclipse".
It is the middle of the night here in Scotland but as we were blessed with a wonderfully clear night, and in this part of the world we do not suffer from bad light pollution, I stayed up to watch.
The poor wee camera had a real problem trying to auto-focus once totality was reached, but think this is the best shot.

The rest of the shots are here:

Great pic ! I was going to try one but it's a wee bit overcast tonite. The drive home from the boys hockey game out of town ( out in the sticks )  was excellent tho, as with that super full moon it was like we had a street light the whole way !

A couple of hundred cranes trying to get organised for moving south. Sometimes they circled for a moment. Perhaps they found a little lift in the autumn air? Or maybe it was a part of sorting out the flock into a formation?

Pretty noisy birds, even heard from a little altitude.

Maybe they were waiting for clearance from Air Traffic Control........?  ;D
Kit's Rule 1 ) Any aircraft can be improved by fitting longer wings, and/or a longer fuselage
Kit's Rule 2) The backstory can always be changed to suit the model

...and I'm not a closeted 'Take That' fan, I'm a REAL fan! :)

.....customs

I would love to see that. We see a few passing by and you can definitely hear them even when they are way up ! The Canada Goose season is starting here, with more and more passing over the house. We are in an old swampland, that was drained for agriculture, and there is also a protected wewtland nearby.

I woke up in the wee hours so went out on to the balcony (waved at the assembled masses obviously ) and took a gander at that blood moon. It was quite a sight even with the light pollution around here.

And no, the wee small hours are not the Wee small hours. I can still get through the night thank you  ;D

Now that you mention it... They were crossing the approach path to the airport/airbase. I live right under the path, at 8 NM, or so.

edit:
According to the local paper, bird spotters have been observing the migration on hilltops. Yesterday, one site counted 16274 flying cranes - before rain showers obscured visibility...

At about 5:15 pm today, a Hercules about 500 feet above the house. It was over so quickly that there was no chance to take photos or identify it more accurately.

Saw an RNZAF NH-90 heading South-ish near home today, so that would probably put him on approach to Wellington Airport.

First time I'd seen one 'in the metal'.

Still miss the Huey...

Cheers

Recent siting over Brisbane, didn't know what it was at first...heard what sounded like a Porsche sports car until I looked up.
We had one a few years ago....until the pilot came in too fast and "crunch'!

Now I know the Aussie flag is facing in the correct direction but it looks odd, because you assume it would be flying backwards in the breeze

That thing most probably has a tailwind.
I know from experience just how slow airships can be. Many years ago, when I was an ATCO at Edinburgh, I was doing tower and working an airship. He was at 2000ft and wanted to transit the approach path about four miles west of the airfield. I cleared him to do so and to report when clear to the north of the extended runway centre line, he was four miles south of the centre line at this point.
twenty minutes later I was still waiting for that call.  :banghead:

(On a nominal 3 degree glide-path at four miles from touchdown you should be passing 1200ft, less than the 1000ft vertical separation required)

Watching an airship is like watching a Fairey Swordfish coming across a field. I was at Duxford back in 1979 at a Battle of Briton airshow awaiting the Swordfish and ran out of film in one camera. So, by the time the Swordfish had come into range, I'd rewound the first film, named it, and reloaded the next 36 exp film into the Canon and fired off a couple of frames as not to jam the camera and the Stringbag hadn't arrived yet.

Ah, the good old days!

5pm this afternoon, just in from doing my National Trust volunteering, a Tornado  heading west at about 400 feet. Probably heading for the Mach Loop...........but only one......they usually travel in twos.
