. . . Two A-10s just made their (Almost) daily eastbound run overhead, something like 600 - 1000 feet up.  They should be coming back westbound in an hour or so . . .

This happens around here & happens almost every day.

They're probably headed up to WGR to play with the ASOS, getting some controls and A/G in.

A-10 is my fav jet, never seen one on the ground yet alone airborne, what do they sound like? Same as any other turbofan I suppose...
No they don't.  They're very, very quiet, until they fly past you, thanks to the B-24/25 style tail.  And when they fire that gun, you'll see the nose disappear into a cloud of smoke before you hear two very distinct "BRAAAP"s- the first is the gun firing, the second is the rounds impacting.  I wish I had video from some of the controls I'd observed at Warren Grove Range, when the A-10s came in.

NOTHING  seen over my house today......nothing at all!!!   No light aircraft from Shobden,  no helicopters or Hercules off to play with the Hereford Cowboys, no air ambulance, no RAF  at low altitude disturbing the peace....and a veil of high cloud so no civil stuff visible at altitude.    Where have all the aviators gone???

End of the month......fuel budget spent

That is almost exactly what I thought when I read that! ;D

The RAF made up for their absence yesterday by coming over chateau Rheged at  about 87 foot 6inches (or so it felt like) above ground level with a brace of Tornadii

This public service was brought to you by... well, you... the British tax payer!

Not exactly 'over' our house, more like near the ground and 20 feet in front of the living-room window.

It's a Ruby-Throated Hummingbird Lance, in the 30 odd years I've been in Canada I had only seen a few Hummingbirds, in Calgary a couple of times and out in the mountains near Canmore once.  Now where we live, we have them in the yard nesting, and we didn't even know they were there.  Those red flowers you see it feeding from are about half the size of my hand and they're even smaller than the flower. Now that I know how to spot them, I see them quite often now but this has been the first time I've got a photo of one, they're quite shy ---

Apparently they're quite abundant around here, it's just that you don't see them. Mrs kitnut says a few times there had been what she thought was a large flying beetle buzzing around her when she has been working out in the flower beds, now we realize what they really were.

Kitnut, I frequently have 4 or 5 Hummingbirds on my Mimosa tree, usually in the morning and evening.

They ARE fun to watch, aren't they??

Yup!

where I am is at their extreme northern end of their range (Central Alberta) and when I did a google search about them, I was really surprised to find how abundant they are around here.  When I first saw one in our yard last year (third week in May), there were no flowers or anything like that in bloom and I couldn't figure out what they were surviving on, knowing that they eat nectar.  Well what I found out was, if you have woodpeckers around, specifically Sapsucker Woodpeckers, after the woodpecker has made a hole to get to the sap, these particular hummingbirds follow along and eat the sap too ---  Once the flowers (like the type in my photo) bloom, then you see them more frequently like around this time of year.

Yup wonderfull birds, seen a fair few in my travels and they never cease to amaze me, can watch them for hours.

The most interesting birds I see in the UK are the Swifts (might be swallows) when I'm up on the farm. They nest in the stables, don't have to fly far for food that way. When flying in the early evening they do some fantastic aerobatics.
Do not condemn the judgement of another because it differs from your own. You may both be wrong.

Nesting in the stables, they much more likely to be Swallows Chris.
Swifts tend to nest on the outside of buildings whereas Swallows do not mind being inside.
