Regarding the A-4s. I now know that they are all ex-Israeli AF.
If you look at the photos you can see that they all have the extended tail pipes for IR protection, they have the sensor pods under the tail pipe, and if you look at the underside of the wing roots they have the larger fairings for the DEFA canons.
The one in Israeli style camo apparently just retained it's original scheme.

Ahah, I thought as much.

I was wondering who else had that extended tail pipe on their A-4s.

CRACKING 2nd batch of pics BTW Jim.

IIRC Singapore also used extended tailpipes on their F-4S versions.

While putting the rubbish out today (It's the second Friday of the month so it must be the Green Bin day today, I hope....) I heard a fairly loud piston engine noise and looked up, as you do.

Nothing........

Still the noise went on, coming from the same direction and I'm thinking 'That must be flying VERY slowly not to have come into sight yet' when this little black speck appeared against the cloudbase. Somewhat mesmerised I wondered what the devil it was, and it WAS flying very slowly too, but still making a heck of a racket. It was obviously a helicopter but not one of the rather ubiquitous Robinson family, and it was also small, somewhat mystifying.

As it got closer all became clear (and I do mean clear....) as it turned out to be a bubble canopy Bell 47/Sioux!!!

I didn't know there were any flying the UK, but it seems there's ex-Army Sioux still airborne as well as at least one civvie 47 too.

I couldn't help thinking that if it was THAT loud down where I was, whatever was it like for those aboard it???  :o

The Army Historic Aircraft Flight have a Sioux, I snapped it at the Red Bull Air Races at Longleat some years back.  It was a complete wash out and the event was cancelled, but I at least got a few close up pics of the Sioux, as well as an Alouette II and a Scout:

There are two Ag equipped Bell 47's in this area of South Australia still used regularly for spraying, there was a Kawasaki built version too but that was written off before I came here and is just parts on a airfield now and there is a different type of 47 with a full fuselage that doe's (or used to, I haven't been there for a while) joy flights in the Barossa Valley. They are the three I know about, but I'm sure there are more flying in Australia. Love the bubble choppers .

Your welcome!  I do get a visit fairly regularly from a white Alouette II, clattery old thing but lovely to see.

If you ever get a chance to stop there, check the front lower hull.  If its rounded, its a 48, if its flat, its a 60

Great pics of the Sioux Mossie, thanks very much. I've got a kit of one hidden away somewhere, perhaps I'll drag it out for a look-see..... ;D

Steel Penguin

heard rotor blades thumping away in the office today, ( not that unusual normally there the wrong side of the site for me to see)   that slowly got loader, and then slightly discordant,  looked out and saw a Chinook heading away,   a couple of other window watchers looked  and then looked puzzled as I came out with " that's odd"    when asked  why I replied  " well normally they fly in pairs"     to which they said that there was only the one,  and then the rotors got loader again and the second went over,  leaving me feeling rather justified.
the things you learn, give your mind the wings to fly, and the chains to hold yourself steady
take off and nuke the site form orbit, nope, time for the real thing, CAM and gridfire, call special circumstances.

Your welcome Kit. I've got some more close ups of the Sioux if you want to see them?

I guess it's the Italeri kit you've got? Nice little kit, the tail boom is a little fragile, unfortunately my box took a slight knock and will take some effort to repair it.

This was taken last week, not long after the Hughes 520N left the area the Hughes 500E that checks the power lines came back and this time I got some still pics and video of it cruising along the lines on the far side of the next door field

Edit: I did a rego search and I have been naming it wrong, it's made by McDonnell Douglas Helicopter Company not Hughes, and it is a 369D. Looks like a 500E to me.

These are what they used in the MASH tv show are they not?

Yes.  Used by many armies and air forces well into the 1980s.
