Honestly, it's the honest ones you have to watch out for!!!

Try to buy some cheap very old airfix and KP kits. Perhaps look at an airshow ;)

Is it the in-flight style stand like Thomas mentioned Lenny, or just a 'plinth' to rest them on?  There's all sorts of ways you can do both effectively & cheaply.

In flight, the cheapest & easiest is a bit of wire coathanger, cut to size & bent to shape.  Not very pretty but cheap & chearfull.  Drill holes a wooden base & the aircraft (best secured with putty or similar) & your done.  You could also get hold of perspex (try the net) or metal rod (try DIY shops) reasonably cheaply.  If you heat the perspex gently, it should be pliable enough to bend without damage.  Steel will need the right tools.  Larger rod & models may need bolts inserted into the stand & aircraft.

If it's a plinth you want, old off cuts of wood, sawn to shape, sanded & painted up will look as good as the amount of work you want to put into it.  Another idea, (usually for fantasy style exhibits but WTH) are pieces of flat stone that you can get from garden centres.  Polished & varnished or painted they can look quite good.  You can buy ready made plinths very cheaply (£2/3 for a 1/72ish size) from guys at the big model shows, or get them off the net.  Trumpeter are now doing display cases very cheaply compared to other manufacturers, most are around £5/6.

I don't think it's nice, you laughin'. You see, my mule don't like people laughin'. He gets the crazy idea you're laughin' at him. Now if you apologize, like I know you're going to, I might convince him that you really didn't mean it.

I've seen this for fairly cheap at many hobby stores. It's intended for gundam and mecha models but I've been tempted to put an airplane on one.

It'd look pretty good for modern jets, especially "fifth generation" fighters like the F-35, Su-47, etc.

If you want to do the whole DIY thing, try the local craft store. They might have cheap pine plaques which are great for display bases.

If you can find them in enough quantities, the three pronged plastic things that come in your pizza box when you order out are ok for a last ditch model stand. I have one from a while back I used to mount my kitbash of a Star Trek TOS single engine Scout/Destroyer.

I use them as dining tables for that doll house I don't have

Plexiglas rod is a great route to go - I've got this Gnat with a rod up it's backside. The base is an overturned metal ashtray with the plexiglas epoxied into one of the cutouts where you would normally rest your smoke. The base is heavy enough to hold up just about any model, mounted at any angle.

Thanks Allan, just wondered if it meant something entirely different in Oz, you never know.  It's like when Americans use the word 'fanny' for backside it brings out guffaws of childish laughter here in the UK (same area on ladies, just 'around the front')!
