Wonders... could I do a scheme like that mottling with brushes? <_<
Whatever.

Just love the German catamaran carrier! Hmmm... catamran Nimitz!!! Tophe, have you ever thought Zwilling carriers instead or aircrafts ?
King Arthur: Can we come up and have a look?
French Soldier: Of course not. You're English types.
King Arthur: What are you then?
French Soldier: I'm French. Why do you think I have this outrageous accent, you silly king?

Well regardless I would rather take my chance out there on the ocean, that to stay here and die on this poo-hole island spending the rest of my life talking to a gosh darn VOLLEYBALL.

You can do mottle with brushes. Not as good as an airbrush but it can be done.

I used to "stipple" the mottle with a brush and then when partially dry (enamels work best) use a small pice of sponge  to dab the mottle. In that way you can "blur" the edges of it, takes practice and you won't win any competition's nowadays but you can make a good job of it. Back in the 60/70's thats all we could do.

The other method is to use a small sponge to apply the mottle

Now I tend to use one of thes, a spray can and a LOT of masking  ;)

Do not condemn the judgement of another because it differs from your own. You may both be wrong.

Radish

It's worth experimenting with acrylics and water for mottling too.

Otay, I'm gonna go into Joyless Engineering/Naval Architecture Numptie mode here, but...
the sea would have to be as smooth as a millpond to use that carrier, even a 5 degree roll would make operations 'difficult'. Interesting concept but the spacing is too extreme.

Don't see why not, try using small 'stenciling' brushes. Basically a round brush with short firm bristles that you hold vertically and tap straight down on the surface.
Cutting down an older brush works well.

Using a stencil brush

*snicker* Others have.  Scroll down on Adm. U. Furashita's Fleet to the CVLV, IJN Nibai.

It works pretty well.

Here's a Special Hobby P.211 that I made a few years ago.

This P.1106 has a similar mottle pattern:

The mottle may be a bit sharp in these pictures, but they were done with acrylic paints and a brush on damp paint (the paint was dry, I just brushed on some water before applying the mottle).

Airbrushing freehand produces much softer mottle patterns.

The only claim to fame for these models is that  they appeared in a David Myhra book on German project aircraft.

Super builds Greg,

The He-280 always looks the part as a Jabo and the Carriertamaran is just the bomb (physics aside - but then this is What If?).

very thin paint and a Q-tip can work too.

I invite all and any criticism, except about Eric The Dog, it's not his fault he's stupid

Nice work....for Luft '46 type stuff ! The a/c carrier looks great, but the space doesn't look to useable on it. I'd still like to see some more of it, tho ! Specially the aeroplanes !
