It'll never win a prize, but it was fun. 6 sqn. seemed right, and that air intake just called for a sharkmouth!
Hope the pictures work.

I think that looks really neat Glenn, nicely done?  I've decided mine will be a high altitude escort interceptor so probably have an all grey over PRU Blue camo scheme.  It'll have a couple of Red Top missiles too.

Yes, that's where I found the drawings I have and I printed them out.  My friend Steve (BritJet) had sent me a link to the photo of the fuselage sections and I back tracked to the website and found them there.

thanks glenn for posting the picture of the 6 sqn P1121. as the kit instructions
have a 74 sqn a/c in them as well as the 54 sqn option on the decal sheet, it seems
to me a good time to talk a bit about how the P1121 would have faired in service.

so....  ^_^ could my idea of about 150 P1121's being built be right? would the type
have been exported at all and what would it have competed against? on these two
latter points, yes... i could see them in service with the singaporean, SAAF and the
chilean AFs and it would definately have been in the same class as the F-105.

over to you guys.

Hey kitnut, is this an entire resin kit?  I've been trying to get my hands on one without success.  I can't even find it on Hannants.

Hi, sorry I should have said, this is the old Maintrack vacuform with enhanced resin bits, which look very tasty.

I've added some pics in my gallery of all the other parts:

http://groups.msn.com/TheWhatifandoddballm...to&PhotoID=2258

There's some on the instruction sheet, which is in colour, the decals are the peel the back off and then wet the top type (Clear-Fix Type)

You can reach Whirlybird at:

so....  could my idea of about 150 P1121's being built be right?

Depends.
To get an early order the RAF might stick with a fighter only version, most likely in 1960 instead of further Lightning orders. That makes sense as a successor to the Javelin, with a large AI scanner and the second seat, possibly something in the order of 70 to 160 aircraft.

It could under the right circumstances succeed against the P1154 and Jaguar, so yes. 150 for that role would be about right, likely with Blue Parrot and either undernose mounted or fusilage mounted unit as seen in the Jaguar's nose (I forget the name).

Exports?
Well it sits midway between a F104 and a F4. Likely to take some Lightning sales to Saudi, possible sales to India, instead of the Flogger (predating it in fact) partly as a licensed deal.
Would be interestint to see its effect on Sweden, it could undermine their own efforts that produce the Viggen, seeing SAAB just build multirole P1121's under license instead.

An early South African order might be possible for the fighter.
Australia would be a good one to investigate, they might be tempted instead of the MirageIII/O.

Just found this on ARC, it's a cut-away of the P.1103 the fore runner to the P.1116:

http://www.arcforums.com/forums/air/index....opic=123849&hl=

It shows quite clearly how the undercarriage was to work, I see now that there's another gear door which hinges at the bottom of the fuselage, this doesn't show on the P.1121 kit.  Also as I had figured out,  the small slot in the resin parts should actually be pan shaped the size of the wheel.
