Quote from: PR19_Kit on August 09, 2025, 05:12:34 AMI like the look of that! I've always liked monitors, they're such weird looking devices, and the Lord Clive's even weirder than most!

I wonder if it's large enough for an RC setup....................  ;)

I've no clue myself, but its not huge. It's just under 30cm/1'. It's 7.5cm in beam, I'm not sure if that's the main hull or the widened section under the waterline. I'd definitely like to see this oddity afloat.

That's definitely a weird looking ship. It would be interesting to build.

Then put it on my "Things I thought I'd never see" thread!!!!     ;)

Technically, the 18" gun was "on the stern" AND "on the beam" since it only fired sideways.  ;D

Didn't the gun come from HMS Furious after her carrier conversion, and that being the case, wasn't there at least one more monitor of this design?

Quote from: Mossie on August 09, 2025, 04:41:02 AM1/35 Bofors Archer self propelled howitzer. You mount all sorts on the back of this.

Currently 14 of those are the British Army's ENTIRE SP artillery force, all the AS-90s having been sent to Ukraine.

Since the chassis is basically a modular Volvo commercial earth-mover, you could have some fun by putting construction equipment on the back and painting it yellow. You could then put the gun on another chassis. Bofors have already done this, using a MAN chassis that has the advantage of fitting into a A400M. Other chassis, including the HEMTT, have been studied.

Most export customers have chosen the MAN version, as have the Swedes for their second batch, so the Volvo version looks like becoming a rare breed. Indeed, the reason the British Army was able to get it's Volvo ones at short notice was because Norway, originally a development partner, pulled out. Sweden picked up their order to save the programme but put them into storage since at that point their own requirement had been met. of the 24 spare weapons, 8 went to Ukraine and 14 to the British Army in compensation for the 32 AS-90s the latter sent to Ukraine.

The Britsh Army studied the MAN version of Archer for it's full SP arty (non-panic) procurement, but eventually chose the RCH-155, which is an equally automated 155mm turret on a Boxer APC chassis. This makes sense, since the British Army is adopting Boxer in large numbers anyway.

Just about large enough, specially with todays small motors and radio gear. I put radio in an ancient Revell USS Saratoga carrier in the 60s, and the RC stuff was much larger then.

It did indeed, and the other one went to the Lord Clive's sister ship, the General Wolfe, but her conversion was never completed. They only built three of those monster guns ever!

As a very occasional dabbler in ships.. Monitors hit the spot for me.. in 1/350 they are big enough, but small enough.

So if this kit hits around the same level of detail as the Trumpeter 1/350 HMS Roberts, I may have to pad out the stash a bit more  ;)

Of course I had to tinker with the Roberts to give the gun a bit of muzzle flash

PR19_Kit

That looks MAGNIFICENT Buzzy!

I didn't know they did the Roberts, I'd have taken more note.

This is exactly the sort of "out of the box "(no pun intended) type of subject I love. It'll go nicely with my Trumpeter Roberts class Monitor.

If I got one of those, and that's actually a possibility, I'd Whiff it by mounting the 18" gun in a proper turret I reckon.

Swap round the gun mounts?

A "proper" 18" turret would add even more weight and was probably not necessary given it's role was shore bombardment.
But then when did we let practicalities stop us.
I vote for a twin 18" turret on the foredeck.

Maybe, with the big gun forward and the 'small' one aft? I don't know enough about balancing a ships hull to know if that would work or not. I guess they must had some good reason for putting the 18" on the stern though.

And as they had another 18" gun going spare, you might as well put it aft on its own, eh?

If all three of them ever fired a broadside the whole ship would go sideways around half a mile I reckon!  :o  :o  :o
