Hi guys,

Michael Wren and myself thought it might be interesting for us to individually come up with some African "What if" Lightning F.6 schemes. Four countries were picked, Central African Republic, Liberia, Burkina Faso and Guinea Bissau, then the creating began.   Here are the results. :P

Here's part one, enjoy!

Does the pope (me) wear a funny hat; do bears poo-poo (with an english accent) in the woods???? Of course iwas a good idea. Those colour schemes are fricking awsome.... Even I can't choose a favourite.

Hmmmmm, call me old Mr Traditional, but I just cannot get my head around Lightnings in dry and dusty Africa....

Why not? They were used by the Saudis, after all.

Yeah I know - but with MASSIVE BAC/EE back-up - I just don't see that sort of back-up being made available to some West Afican and Sub-Saharan nations.... Unless of course, there was a back-of-the-hand deal involving Oil or precious metals or some other rare/expensive ores. Perhaps I'm one of those modelers who like their projects more rooted in reality.

Never a criticism just the way I like to build/paint my projects. Luckily there is room for everybodies opinions and ideas, which is - after all - the whole point of what we all do.... isn't it

Maybe the mods should change my signature to "Never got beyond painting its differently..."

What about when countries strike off their inventory? Suppose it goes that England was dumping her Lightnings at firesale prices. Canada has done that with Sabers, Starfighters and Freedom fighters. Get 'em in running order and become buddies with the nation that buys your old clapped out rides (cause they can't afford new) and while your being buddies, you get to keep out the commies.

HA!  Says the man who came up with the Eurovision wars!!

Gary, I know what you're saying, but the Lightning was a VERY labour intensive machine.  By the end, it took every scrap of know-how from 30 years of ops to keep them flying.  African nations don't have a great track record at maintaining complex weapons sytems, their people lack the technical knowledge and skills to keep them running.  When the US sold Egypt F-4s, after a year virtually the entire fleet was u/s.  McDD and the USAF had to send over an army of mechanics and engineers to get them in the air again.

Of course, there is nothing to stop us offloading those Lightnings, and them being painted in those cool colour schemes, before they gradually all become u/s.  Or like Ian says, they have the money to pay for western expertise, like the oil-rich Arab states.
