An aircraft I've never heard of, and to look at it you'd think it a Whif, that toted a retractable centre float and reached 285/350 mph depending on who you believed!  :o

Yup it's an interesting concept. Something in the back of my brain says that there was a single engined fighter proposed using the same retractable "central float". Can't find the appropriate Secret Projects book at the moment though  :banghead:

Captain Canada

Defo a cool machine with lots of whiffy potential. Be fun to try something similar.

You are, of course, correct!  The Blackburn B44..........as shown on the lower half of this webpage https://dingeraviation.net/b40andb44/blackburn_b40.htm

In fact, any of Dinger's Aviation Pages are worth a look.

I have previously also considered the concept of the Blackburn B.20 concept and the single retractable float in my Fairey Zander:

Maybe one day i'll have another go on this concept in something japanese.

It was amazing device, and I'm pleased to say I actually have a kit of one, given to me by the late lamented Venerable Mike McEvoy the year before he died, thank you Mike.

He had intended to Whiff it to the extent of changing its engines for something more reliable and adding the odd gun turret or two, and I fully intend to do just that as well, in Mike's honour.

If only I could FIND the darn thing in my chaotic house! It's in a massive box as the B.20 was BIG!
Kit's Rule 1 ) Any aircraft can be improved by fitting longer wings, and/or a longer fuselage
Kit's Rule 2) The backstory can always be changed to suit the model

...and I'm not a closeted 'Take That' fan, I'm a REAL fan! :)

Kit

The article does list some different engine options that were considered. Think the most interesting would've been the Fairey Prince and it does seem a big shame that it wasn't allowed to develop further.
