AlternateHistoryHub is a Youtube channel that explores what-if historical scenarios ranging across time and the globe in every scale. Obviously a great source of inspiration for the backgrounds of what-if builds, either by copying one of his scenarios directly, or by studying them to learn how to construct your own:

Some examples:

What if the Western Roman Empire survived instead of the Eastern one?

What if the Norman invasion of England in 1066 failed?

"Things need not have happened to be true. Tales and dreams are the shadow-truths that will endure when mere facts are dust and ashes, and forgot."
 - Sandman: A Midsummer Night's Dream, by Neil Gaiman

"I dunno, I'm making this up as I go."
 - Indiana Jones

NARSES2

As far as the East and West are concerned it depends on your definition of "survives" ?  After all my namesake Narses re-conquered Rome in 552. So maybe a Western general re-conquers the East and it all still falls in the early middle ages. You can have many a happy argument about an actual date for the fall of the East. Especially if you don't consider the fall of Constantinople to be that date
Do not condemn the judgement of another because it differs from your own. You may both be wrong.
