Gondor

I was bidding for that, but it went far, far higher than I was prepared to spend

There was a Mosquito sheet that I got a few years back that I really wanted and was winning at my near top end - £20.  I did a snipe in the last few seconds to up it to £30 (which I was prepared to pay, because I really wanted it).  If you get outbid by someone using sniper, make sure the buggers pay through the nose.

Then ironically, DK rereleased that sheet.

That was always my policy if it's something rare that you do want.  Most of the time now?  Cheeky low bids and if I don't win?  There'll be another along soon.

Theres few of lifes problems that can't be solved with the proper application of a high explosive projectile .

The maddest one I remember was the C-Scale 72nd Canberra set - comprising a few vac form bits and about twenty white metal lumps - that went for about £260.

Collectormania?
I buy models to build them. It might take me a while to get to it, but that's the way it goes.

I mean, I can understand collecting the boxes for the box-art, but certainly not paying through the nose for it. Especially when you can find decent images online that could then be printed out quite easily.

That's not how the collector's minds work though, it's the actual 'ownership' of the article that's important to them.

Yep.  I wanted all the 1978 Lego Town sets boxed, even though I already had them unboxed.  Boxes didn't have to be sealed, just there.  I know in one case it was just the box, the instructions and a few bits.  Think I ended up with three of that one.

There was another I'd got as a loose lot, the 1976 Marina set, and the bits were in really good condition too, some even retained their stickers.  Then the baseboard, then the box, although they may have been together, I can't remember for sure - all from eBay - and finally the instructions from Bricklink.  There were a few others I bought as just the boxes, as I already had the contents.
