Captain Canada

Sad sad day. I'm still mad at myself for not putting my foot down and attending the show at Yeovil when we were in the UK.

It's not quite THAT sad, '558 still has a number of displays to fly before she's finally grounded this year.

I'm not sure that 'safety concerns' is the correct reason for the grounding, as I read it the real reason is BAe Systems not wishing to continue their design support, or whatever the official title for it is.

The word over here in Canuckistan is that RR ( or BAe or whomever ) will no longer overhaul the engines ?

Aren't the spars about to reach the end of their flight hours, and its just not economically viable to replace them, and they wont get insurance or clearance to fly without them being replaced  :banghead:.

I know 558 is an emotional issue, but she can't fly forever, and I really can't blame the private parties if they no longer want to be involved if that is indeed the case.  After a decade or so of off and on again crisis funding, and operating in unknown areas of airframe fatigue and engine life, expertise and certification I say it is time.  I don't "blame" the certifiers or buisinesses involved.  As an enthusiast I of course I would like to see all sorts of planes fly for decades after their retirement but I have no expectation that the governement or someone like Boeing would fully support a private B-47 or Lockheed a private Constellation/P-38/SR-71 etc. that were on the airshow circuit.  If they politely decided it was not in their interests, or did not want to go on record to certify something that they could not properly certify, had worries about being in areas of uncharted service life or liabilty that is their call.

Some great parties supported 558 for years and got something done many said would be impossible.  Declare victory.  A great run by all involved.
