as a combo lift/propulsion device.

I've read a sci-fi story where the main character found his Plasma Cannon* (a hand-held weapon in this instance  :o ) could be used as a propulsion device in low/no-grav environments... of course, this left a trail of destruction behind him, but hey - there're disadvantages to anything... ;D

There's a Larry Niven story ("The Deadlier Weapon" IIRC) where exactly the opposite happens. A crew of totally peaceful future humans, who firmly believe all advanced species must be equally peaceful, encounter violent & predatory aliens for the first time in hundreds of years. One of them studied history and was sufficiently mentally stable to be allowed to view the restricted-access History of Warfare. He turns the ship around as if to flee, engages the drive on full-power, and cuts the alien ship in half. Afterwards, far from cheering his victory, he's profoundly depressed, because he knows all the dreadful arts that humanity is going to have to relearn very shortly.

Interesting premise.

Couple of modern jet floatplane posted on Twitter ("X" ). Yes, they're probably AI-generated, but they're still right up our street, ideas-wise:

First one from Tom Antonov, here: https://x.com/Tom_Antonov/status/1914031694304231507

Then in response, this from HushKit, here: https://x.com/Hush_Kit/status/1914258819447754770

EDIT: replaced "Gripens" because they're not both Gripens...

And Aeronavale too, so it's right that it has floats. Who needs carriers?  ;D

Is it, though? No anchors in the roundels. ;)

So what's the maritime equivalent of "Turf Wars"  ;D
Do not condemn the judgement of another because it differs from your own. You may both be wrong.

I'm not even sure it's a French user now, the roundels look red white and green. That's Italy, isn't it?

But Italy don't have Rafales.

However, it could be orange, white & green - which would be Indian, & they do have Rafales.  ;)

So that's a reason NOT to build one like this?  ;D  ;)

Indeed so, it could well be orange.

"Surf Wars", presumably...

Given how short it's wingspan is, it could be the little-known Italian Rafale variant with AMX wings... ;)
