I know people have done plenty of F-14s from the movie "Top Gun" but has anyone done then with low vis markings for Mavericks aircraft and Icemans too? Also since they would be more then likely upgraded just before retirment would they have been F-14Bs orDs?

Maverick

Arch, I'd assume any kit release would be in low viz for Mav or Ice as they were flying TPS schemes in the movie???

Shasper

Nope, all the TG aircraft were in hi-vis markings:

Sometime ago I think I had asked our resident profilest to do up some F-14A/B/Ds in the fictional VF-1 & -213 markings (both hi & low vis) without the "patch" look"

I had thought about trying to do it with the A-7 decals that came out in low vis but the markings were to differant then what the A-7 badges were. If I had a printer and the software I would do it myself after learning how to do it.

I'm confused now, cause after seeing this thread, I put my tape into the VCR.  Although I haven't got up 2 the 'Top Gun' part of the movie, the Turkeys are all flying in low viz TPS.  As for that tail marking, it looks more like VA-25 rather than any of the VF units??????

You sir are corect, the A/C from the movie were drawn from VF-111, VF-114 & VF-213 (the main camera bird was from this sqn, you can even see the "patch" style VF-213 mkgs during the various ACM hops throughout the movie). the Fictional "VF-1" markings came from a Hawkeye sqn (VAW-191 I'd like to say, but dont quote me on that), and the "VFA-213" look came from VA-25, as you pointed out. And all of the aircraft were in the (at the time) newer TPS, but if you pay attn to some of the fltline scenes you'll notice that the real VF-1 birds are in allover gull gray.

Nowthen, would there be any TG inspired profiles in the distant future? *hint*

It's odd they used VF-1 and VFA-213, given that both squadrons existed in real life.  Even moreso that they used VFA as an option, given the Turkeys AA role.  Oh well, must have been some odd Hollywood thing.

Regarding profiles tho, TPS Tomcats, with fictionalised markings doesn't sound awfully inspiring.  It may b just me, but it's a bit 'real world', sorta

ICEMAN's squadron can get done using VFA-25's F-18 decals.  Squadron decal was correct, just matched up with a "fictional" number.

If I remember correctly, MAVERICK's squadron insigina actually existed and was from a Hawkeye squadron.  These should also be available in lo-viz B)

i remember airfix released both their A-4 and F-14 kits with decals to tie in with the film.

but having said that you will be doing well if you find this issue. i think i still have some of these decals in the spares box though.

The Hawkeye squadron markings used were VAW-110 'Firebirds'.

I think I may need to get out more...
