Whilst trying to sort out my loft a box dropped off the top of a shelving unit onto my head and thence onto a shelf full of completed kits which then are either squashed and lose their undercarriages-which shoot off in various directions or they fall to the floor and break into small pieces-resin kits being quite brittle!....some may be salvagable

OMG, that is bad news, i really hope you can salvage them.
i has a situation just like that a good 8 years ago, i was on holliday for 2 weeks, and when i got back, my cat trached my model shelves (20 models in total)
i managed to repair most of them, but 5 were concidered scrap  :(
lucky for me, i had saved enough money to replace the lost kits  <_<

i sure hope i wont encounter something like that when im moving next year

Arrgh, sorry to hear that! :(  :(  :(   Well, they're irreplaceble as far as the work you've put into them goes, but have you thought about putting in an insurance claim?  Contents insurance should cover any write-offs.  There will be a fair amount of moneys worth there, especially if several resin kits have bitten the dust (& if they are rare or oop you might be able to get more).  For those you aren't worried about replacing, there might be a silver lining in that they may pay for new additions to stash, new airbrush etc.
I don't think it's nice, you laughin'. You see, my mule don't like people laughin'. He gets the crazy idea you're laughin' at him. Now if you apologize, like I know you're going to, I might convince him that you really didn't mean it.
