First I would suppose that it would be necessary to either point out the backstories or their location.

Second would be to establish a length of backstory- Obviously you shouldn't be comparing a backstory 1 paragraph long versus one that is several pages long.

There are other other things to consider, someone will bring things up as the idea is mulled over. B)
