Why did the Royal Navy call them Chicago Piano?  Why not Elswick, or Southsea?

Chicago, home of the Valentine Day Massacre. Lots of machine gun fire?
Just my guess.

8 (big) machine-guns banging out lots of rounds at once = very gangster, & the Thompson submachine gun was called the "Chicago typewriter", so the logical extension was "Chicago (something)" & "piano" sounded right (as, even in the 1930s, "organ", which the weapon looked like, could be misinterpreted).

Yeah, the image of the American gangster had very much spread across the pond, even into Europe. There was that famous picture of Churchill with the Tommy gun, the German's countered it by labelling him a gangster.

Dad served on the crew of a 2pdr Pom Pom in both the Med and the Pacific. Heaved ammo in the Med, pulled the trigger in the Pacific after a gunnery course in S Africa waiting the BPF to "round the Cape"
Do not condemn the judgement of another because it differs from your own. You may both be wrong.

Debateable, at least in regard to space. The quad pom-pom is two-over-two, which is superficially more compact that the quad Bofors 4-in-line layout. The quad pom-pom had about the same swept volume as the twin Bofors. Both of them need considerable extra space around them for loaders to operate in: even the top-loading Bofors needed guys to reach over it from the sides in order to put fresh clips in. The quad pom-pom also had more rounds in it's feed trays, so the reloading cadence could afford temporary slip ups and slow downs too.

Ballistically, the Bofors was the MUCH better gun, which is why it was adopted.

Shilka.  Wouldn't want to be on the receiving end though.

Took three attempts to stop predictive text changing it to Sheila. It must be a warning, stay away from Sheila.

This photo is a good illustration of the size of the octuple mount pom-pom.
