Moulding

What with all this talk about moulds and resin casting, it's time for me to add my twopennorth proper.

As part of my ongoing TSR2 programme, I need to remould various parts and add ons for the new Airfix kit.  I also need a number of overwing pylons for later versions and the ones the Hasegawa Jaguar are the best ones, so they need clonig and although I've got various bits, they're all on separate moulds.

So, I've brought all the pylons, chaff dispensers , IFR probe and laser designator onto one mould.  The plylons and chaff dispensers are glued onto some plastic card and the other two bits go into the bed of playdoh.

RED moulding rubber?!  Kinky, like something I would expect Radish to use.

just realised myself...the red stuff is for casting low melt alloys and is slightly less pliable than the normal moulding slicones for resin etc. ill try and see what kindv prices i can get from companies re RTV.s for the sortv amounts we use and post up some links asa.

other than that my hat off to Lee there for his concise and clear posting..iv just fwd'd it to some of my students as a 'how to' to save me the hassle explaining it, hehehe!

Thanks wooksta.  And your point about the two-part molds in the other thread is well made.

I was just going to add that Smooth-on (spelling??) has a sample casting set that's something like $30, and includes the rubber and plastic.  It's not fancy, but it will do the job for a lot of dinky parts.  Trouble is, they have this policy of only sending you one.  After that it can get spendy.

Wooksta, I want to add an IFR probe and pylons to my 1/48 Dynavector TSR-2. What would be a suitable donor plane in that scale? Looking at your parts I can see the pylons being scratchbuilt, but the IFR probe looks donated from something else.

I have the Airfix 1/72 scale Jaguar GR3 and 1/48 Jaguar GR1A kits here, both of which include amongst the weapons examples of the chaff/flare dispensers (they call them TRACOR dispensers here, can't remember why) so if I want to add the scabbed on dispensers I will be OK.

The 1/48th scale Jag includes some quite nice overwing Sidewinder launchers and pylons. I noted you recommended the Hasegawa versions for a 1/72 TSR-2 fit, would the Airfix ones suit in 1/48th scale?

To stop this being a hijack, I was thinking of trying some molding and casting myself, so these may be a good item to start, the dispensers only needing a single sided mold I guess?

I guess I may have to buy my first Tornado model..........
