Im currently working on a new version of the F-14 tomcat (my oppinion, it retired to early). as the USAF held the most capable SEAD aircraft, jalousy raced across the USN. they wanted an SEAD aircraft with bigger range and payload then the "super bug" and a desision was made to convert and rebuild a number of F-14A/D airframes into the new carrier based "wild weasels". in 2006, the USN recieved its first F-14G, witch had a new glass cockpit with 4 color display screens, an IRST witch mase the aircraft capable of carrying the AIM-9X, Python-5 and the IRIS-T/US (US made version of the IRIS-T).

for the main role as a SEAD aircraft, it is armed with 2 to 4 AGM-88's, 2 SRAAM's, and a radar jamming pod (2 optional). another option is the presision strike role in witch the cat is armed with 4 LGB's or JDAM's.

the original designation was F-14G "Tomcat 21" (inspired by you guys here). but because of the SEAD role, the pilots called the aircraft "Wildcat II" because of the "wild weasel" configuration.

THE MODEL

i just finished sub-assembly of the F-14's Cockpit, if you look closely and good, you will see good detail from the rear cockpit workstation. also note the IRST i mounted on the nose. the front dashboard was missing in the kit, aswell as the HUD, so i just gug into my sparesbox, and found another from a previous model.

the aircraft is a Hasegawa F-14A, that i bought at a rumagesale last month of a mear 5€ (6$).

I hate to break it to ya, but the D model came stock w/ a IRST in a chinpod w/ a Television Sighting Unit (TSU), under the nose. Early A models also had a IRST before they were switched out for the TSU

Seeing as the D and later B model Cats are newer to the fleet, (IMHO) you might want to use these as you base A/C. The A models are a bit on the old side (30 plus as of '02).

The original F-14B test art. did sling a few AGM-45 Shrikes, and there were plans to add the AGM-84a/E and -88 to the D along with the AIM-120. All that got canned after the wall fell and the Clinton-ese years.

How do you plan to mount the HARMS?, I luv the idea of a SAM eatin' Cat!

on the 2 weaponstores onder the "pancake" where the 2 phoenix missiles would be mounted, there will be AGM-88's instead.

i knew about the F-14's modifications for shrike and amraams, thats why i decided to build the cat in the first place.

anyway tommorow evening i will post the completed wildcat. it will be armed with 2 x AIM-9M, 2 x GBU-12, 2 x AGM-88 and a ALQ-99 from a previous prowler kit.
the missing decals were made up by some spare USN decals that i had left over from my F-8EP.

i just did the full works today, and she's ready, since its to dark here now to take any pictures, im gonna make and post them here tommorow  B)

she's all dark grey in the markings of VF-124 (decals from an old F-8 kit)
and the canopy on the G opens sideways like the rafale instead of up. B)

Maybe not a good idea if the aircraft is parked next to a wall in the hangar...
