The S-4 project was begun in the mid 70's to give smaller USN carriers and allied navies a cheaper alternative to replacing their S-2's (the S-3 Viking being too expensive, and still a little too high-tech for most navies).

The S-4A was the original model and had the same capabilities as the S-3, though was not as fast and did not require the large catapults of the supercarriers to operate from.  The S-4B was the export version, and had capabilities somewhere between the S-2 and the S-3.

The example below serves with Belgium's navy, flying out of an airbase outside of Oostende.  It's armed with two Sea Fury ASM's (based on Brimstone, just a lot bigger).

Here's a 1/144 Revell E-2C (from the first batch of models I bought a year ago when I got back into this hobby) that was leftover when I used the rotodome for my EH-53E.  The missiles are two of the mutant Hellfires that came with a 1/72 Airfix WAH-64D.

I figure the S-4 completes the E-2/C-2 family of airframes, serving as the ASW version of the basic airplane, similar to the E-1/C-1/S-2 family of planes.

Nice, very nice.

But, more importantly, I don't recall that EH-53 which is also spectacular.

How did I forget that one?
