Proves the point nicely (thanks), although what I had in mind was a mid-mounted wing, similar to the Fairey Delta 2 (even easier IF you can find suitable wings).

Dassault, in fact.

Mirage, to be precise..

It does, but retaining a distinctive MiGiness in the fin.

Another ill conceived, lazily thought out, crudely executed, badly painted piece of half arsed what-if modelling muppetry.

Quote from: Gondor on May 03, 2026, 11:19:09 AMBoth can end up looking like the subject aircraft. I believe the Italeri kit, formerly the ESCI kit, to be the better of the two. I prefer the breakdown of that kit to the Hasegawa one.

Same assessment here. The ESCI kit is really nice, I prefer it to the Hasegawa kit.

The Airfix kit of the FRS.1 is also quite good, but suffers from the same thing as all the Airfix kits from that time: the parts look klunky.

#33
Since we are into supersonic successors, I started on one ca. 1978, and over the years it morphed into the Nord 1550 Busard, which I only finished last year.
Kestrel main fuselage, Nord Griffon II wings and tail, both heavily modified, with new forward fuselage. Development Pegasus engine, warmed over and main afterburner added by Rolls-Turbomeca, ramjet-style side burners by Nord.

It looks like someone also had the idea to channel the flow of cold air to mix it with the hot gases from the main exhaust nozzles.

PR19_Kit

That idea looks pretty good, but the transition may have been difficult as the centre of lift of the wing would be quite a way aft of the centre of lift when the engine is in VTO mode.

As it accelerated in forward flight it'd have had lots of nose-down force applied the faster it went. Would it work with the wing further forward? Maybe canards would help too, but I never have been sure quite how they work in the RW.
Kit's Rule 1 ) Any aircraft can be improved by fitting longer wings, and/or a longer fuselage
Kit's Rule 2) The backstory can always be changed to suit the model

Yes, gorgeous. The only reason my Busard does not have faired-in forward nozzles was to simplify maintenance access to the side burners: it is a proof-of-concept research X-plane aimed at Mach 1.4 max, not a prototype Mach 2+ fighter.

I wonder if this one just ducts cold nozzle air back to improve the massflow and thermodynamic efficiency of the main nozzles, or does it also have ramjet-style side burners?

Looks as if it has canards just below the rear cockpit fairing. Probably need significant development, but this is Whiffland. Similar thoughts re. sufficient intake massflow at zero airspeed.
Cheers.

PR19_Kit

Oh yes, they are carnards!

I checked Zero_Sen's original post and his concept idea clearly has canards, they're just side-on in the pic above.
