I was having a bit of a tidy up and came across my copy of Mike McEvoy's order of service from January 2022. I noticed from his date of birth in 1936 that Mike would have been celebrating his 90th Birthday this year. This has given me an idea for an informal group build, or rather a group (re)build. When Mike passed away, Dominic McEvoy very kindly passed on lots of Mike's built-up models to members of the SIG. Many of you seemed keen to rebuild, restore or even just use them for parts in other projects. I think it would be a nice gesture to celebrate what would have been his 90th year, with a small display at Telford this November using some of those models that were passed on to members. Those able to attend the show can either give them a good dust, restore and repair them, or do a full rebuild and put on the IPMS What-If table at Scale Modelworld. I don't expect a massive turnout, maybe a dozen or so kits on display would be nice, essentially what Mike would have brought to the show had he still been around.

I've run it past Martin and Dominic they are both happy to go ahead with the idea. I wasn't proposing this to be a formal group build, just a thread where you can post a picture of what you started with, and how it ends up, with in progress shots if you feel so inclined.

I've already got two that I've given a good clean up, and I know Dominic also has a few to contribute. In addition, I thought if we can get a dozen or do on the table, this year's Freightdog Prize will go to the best of the bunch.  If you cannot attend the show, but have one of Mike's kits, you are more than welcome to join in and display it to the forum thread, and still be eligible for the prize.

I LIKE that Colin, I have three of Mike's stuff at home, two of them being seriously large, the Northrop 'Wings'!  ;D

Thank you, Chris, your backing means a lot.

So Kit, you have over 6 months to get one of the 'Wings' in good order as the centre piece of the display, no jumping on it like that poor innocent Northrop B2S!   ;D

I've made a note in my diary to put something in the next Newsletter about it

They're both in pretty good shape actually Colin, the YB-49 being the better as the XB-35 has busted props, as usual with those models.

And I've also got Mike's MB5 converted into a Reno pylon racer too, in glorious PURPLE!  ;D

I will remember Mike most with several models but a Wiffed X29 was inspired by a series he did from SAM when the X29 was released springs to mind. This model has been along since 2004 at least.

However I do know he liked the P1154, so I have the option of using a Freightdog model.

Perhaps at this years SMW the whiff guys can raise a toast in Mike's memory.

I did a T-tail Hunter F1 in his markings.  I'll dig that out.

Great idea, I'm in.

Rebuilt a PC-12 (https://www.whatifmodellers.com/index.php?topic=52262.0) which Martin now holds in the SIG's 'show reserve' that could be included.

I received a handful of Mike's builds.  One has been 'reduced to produce' and parts feature in a currently stalled whif.  Whether I could finish it by SMW is another matter.

There's a two or three other builds which basically only need paint stripping and repainting.  A change to my Project '26 plans should see at least two done by November.  They can then be donated to the 'show reserve' if Martin wants them.

I see every possibility of that.

Perhaps you could re-create one of those X-29 kits? The originals may be long gone.

Brilliant example, that's exactly what I was thinking. Great to have one in the bag already, hopefully you can squeeze another in, but if not, the PC-12 will be a perfect fit.

I'd have to find it first.  I suspect it's in the hardest box to get at in the garage.

X-29s?  Trevor could you PM more details please?  Recently snaffled an X-29 for whiffery, have a plan for it, but plans can always change!

Colin
as it happens I will look for the X29 and see what can be done with the rest. I know Mike did several back then so I know what I can chose to recreate the idea.
