There are many people deserving of knighthoods, my ex-boss Prof. Alan Wickens being one, but maybe less in number than those who have actually been awarded them.....

Totally agreed. Seeing out your time in a safe Civil Service job, or being some political hacks gofer should not qualify anyone for a Knighthood.

You are probably quite right, he comes across as a very normal sort of bloke who was just doing his job
