Serious in the sense that a tender was given for info & a low level of develpoment work.  As for receiveing a USAF MDS, neither did the F-16XL, it was purely a company designation IIRC & only semi-official.  It would have at least been given a letter suffix, although the XL was such a different beast that it may well have been given a completley new designation.

Besides, this is the What-If forum!  You could bring up a scenario were the restrictions plased on US contracts were more punative, but I personally am just interested in seeing what it may have looked like, in model form.
