I think it originally started out as a recognition feature for aircraft owned by the MoD Procurement Executive.  That's my understanding anyway.

totally true. My personal collection of Raspberry ripple machines include a
Vickers 559, a bombcorde, and a Blackburn P.146 (a single-spey LWF of Blackburn)
