I read about this sometime ago in Aeromilitaria, a publication of Air-Britain.  IIRC the plan was to fly Spitfires made in Canada directly to the UK and the towed wing was a large fuel tank.  This was in the event that Germany had partially invaded England and all production of aircraft had been moved to Canada.  At least that's the gist of it from what I can remember.

According to information on the "Early Secret Projects" part of the Secret Projects Forum - www.secretprojects.co.uk - this was part of a project to use a towed wing to increase the load and range of an aircraft with bombs or fuel. Initial tests with a Magister and an auxiliary wing were apparently made in the Summer of 1941 but trouble was experienced with the directional stability of the combination.

There is also a drawing of a Blenheim with a similar auxiliary wing.

(Unfortunately, I can't post pictures to this part of the forum and I'm not sure how to do a link but the Secret Projects post is easy to find once you're on the site. It's titled "Fake or Really Twin Booms!" and was posted on April 3 2007.)

Sadly, Tophe has left 6 months ago because of this BLOODY dilema thread (he was too sensitive for such thing).

Interesting project, that's so odd!!
King Arthur: Can we come up and have a look?
French Soldier: Of course not. You're English types.
King Arthur: What are you then?
French Soldier: I'm French. Why do you think I have this outrageous accent, you silly king?

Well regardless I would rather take my chance out there on the ocean, that to stay here and die on this poo-hole island spending the rest of my life talking to a gosh darn VOLLEYBALL.

Has anybody "zwillinged" a Spitfire, like the P-82?

In want of hobby space!  The kitchen table is never stable.  Still managing to get some building done.
