Title: Posting images from Photobucket
Post by: NARSES2 on March 29, 2011, 03:07:33 am
Now I know this has been asked and answered before but I can't find it  :banghead:

I have 2 1946 GB builds almost ready to post but for the life of me can't figure out how to post from Photobucket !

Can someone please post a "click by click" idiots guide on how to post from Photobucket ?

Maybe then we can pin it for those of us who are IT thick ?

Thanks in advance

Chris

Chris,

If you click on 'direct link' in Photobucket, it will copy the hotllink for the picture in question.  Then on here, click the 'inset image' button (looks like a small picture, second button from the left below the character formatting bar.  That will bring up [IMG][\IMG] on your post (The actual slash will go in the opposite direction (/), but if I don't do it like that, it will try to insert a picture).  Insert the hotlink between these two bracketed items and the picture will appear in your post.

Regards,

Mav

Chris,

Doesn't Photobucket have a way of showing you the 'direct html address' of the piccies you want to post? I know Image shack does as that's what I use. Then you can import the direct html address into your post here and Bob's your Uncle, or should be anyway. I'll just test it.....

Big piccie of me holding up a Canberra.  ;D

Yes it does work like that. You post the direct html link and then highlight it, then hi the 'Insert Image' icon from the library above, 2nd from the left on the 2nd row down, looks like small tele screen.

It's even easier than that: if you mouseover the image, a box of data will appear below it, including a window marked "IMG code" with a string of gobbldegook in it. Put your mouse in that window, left click and it'll change to "copied". Then just paste the result into your forum post: it already has the IMG codes around it.

Harold. When I move my mouse over the picture nothing happens. However there is a box of data underneath with an IMG code in it. I copied that, pasted it into the body of my post and got the red cross !

Like the guys said, hold your mouse over the small picture on your album page, and a box will appear below it with all sorts of codes that start 'http'.  Now put your cursor over the box marked 'Direct Link' and left click it.  It will briefly change to 'Copied'.  Come onto this site, and start a post - as Maverick said, select the insert picture icon (second from left, bottom row of icons), put your cursor right in the middle of the middle brackets, left click, then right click, and select 'Paste'.  (Apologies if I am teaching granny to suck eggs!)  I had similar troubles when I couldn't transfer pics from our PC to Ebay - So I took to using Photobucket instead.

Does the IMG code start with [IMG] and end with [\IMG] (but with the slash the other way)?

If so, it should work.....

Is the folder a public one or a private one?

The way photobucket works for me changed all on it's own some time ago: I used to get a selection of codes under each picture, but now I get the mouse-over routine....

Below each picture (or beside), there are four choices: Email/IM, Direct Link, HTTP, and IMG. For the purposes of this forum, use the "IMG" link. Click on the line of code next to the "IMG" link and it should be briefly replaced by text saying "Copied". Then come back to your post and either use <ctrl>V, (control+"V") or right-click and select "paste". The code, beginnign  and ending with the img" tag should appear, looking something like this:

{img}http://www.photobucket.com/rallymodeller/profiles/thepicinquestion{/img} but with square brackets instead of what is shown here.

or do it another way..............use tinypic which is owned by photobucket

1.....use 'browse' to find the pic you want on your hard drive
2.......hit 'upload'
3....copy 'img code for forums' bit (all of it! ) and paste it into the thread you want the pic to appear in

easy as that

Harold the account is private. Dawned on me yesterday that might be the reason ? I'm going to set up a "public" album at the weekend to see if that works.

Many thanks indeed for all your help lads - Theil your screen shots are a great way to teach people

I will keep having a go at this, until I crack it  ;D

A tip for folk moving to Photobucket:

I set the upload size in "customise your options" to 640 x 480 pixels, which makes it just narrower than the standard width of a forum page when you hotlink it here (as I see it on my screen). If you make it any bigger, then people looking at your thread have to scroll your whole post left and right to see the whole pic, which isn't too bad if you've only posted one, but is a right pain if you've posted loads of pics in one post, because you only get one internal scroll bar per post.

Another option would be to get your own web site and use it as web storage (like I do).  You can get great starter packages for cheap out there, or if you know a friend with a site, sponge of them  ;D

Glenn

PS....Not saying that I have yet!

Title: Re: Posting from Photobucket
Post by: Weaver on April 25, 2011, 07:45:45 pm
Glenn - you don't have to "send" it, just copy it and put it in your post.

For instance, I just went into my photobucket album, moused over a picture and the IMG code box appeared underneath it. I then clicked on the code itself, and the box turned yellow and said "copied" in it. Now if I put the cursor on this page as I'm typing it, I get this:

{IMG]http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d165/hws5mp/copperchopper1.jpg[/IMG}

But with square brackets [] at the ends instead of curly ones {}: I changed the brackets so you could see the code. If I do it again, but leave the brackets alone, you get the picture instead:

Right as Photobucket has changed I thought I'd post this amended set of "how to do"

Log onto your PB account and go to the Library

Go to the picture you wish to post and place the cursor over the "image" code at the bottom of the thumbnail. It's the 2nd one.

Double click on the link and copy.

Go to your site post and simply paste the link in the post.

That's it lads.

There may be easier ways but this works for me and is nice and simple  ;D

If I'm in the album, i have to click on this little 'cog' thing at the top right hand corner, then click the 'show links' button, then choose the .img option.

If I'm on said photo itself, the options are on the side and the .img code is the last one.

Either way, it's defo more dificult and confusing than the old way, and sometimes the photos won't show up in my album until I leave and come back.

Like everything else on the 'web I guess....always changing !

Checking today the "new" photobucket, reading the Support section, I discovered that they will scramble filenames of the uploaded photos unless you deselect the option in the user-settings/privacy section. PROBLEM: I cannot find that section under any of the scroll-down menus.
Most of the users (looking at the comments) are disgusted and seem to have any sort of problems.
Also, the new is uselessly complicated, I won't use it anymore, any suggestion fof another photo upload site?
Pls, check for yourself, I just wanted to give a warning.

I the new bucket you have to do the following steps:
1. Open the bucket wit your password
2. Go to your user name (top right, where the icon with your avatar or photo is)
3. Click on your user name
4. In the drop-down menu choose User Settings
5. A new window opens. In the menu under the title “Personal information” (top left) choose Privacy
6. A new window opens. Uncheck the box under For Future Uploads
7. Use responsibly! ;)

Thanks, Canso.
The "instructions" given in the site seemed to indicate that the user settings were under one of the scrll down menu.
As I am (was) only using PB to upload images to forums - I wouldn't dream of using an external fly-by-night site as real archive of my photos - they have just complicated things. Also finding the link to copy is slower than before. A real backward progress.
I'll be looking for another one, and would be glad of any suggestion.

I've found that sometimes too, with no logical reason being available for the loss of images. But later on they came back again! I've got so much stuff posted up there that it costs me these days too, which is a bit of a disadvantage, but not enough for me to switch sites................. yet.

Another option is Facebook.

You can post photos on Twitter and link them to other websites such as this one. They can't be huge otherwise they won't upload, but the limit is still a decent size. The problem with Twitter is that everything's chronological, so it might take you a while to find an old photo.

I've just started using an alternative social media site called Minds, which has features of Twitter, Facebook, Photobucket and Blogger. You have timelines and groups like other sites, but you also have a gallery feature than works like Photobucket, and you can have your own blog page too. Seems pretty good. It's in beta at the moment, so I don't know if there are going to be storage/file-size limits at some point.

You can find it here: www.minds.com

Guys, I want to make an experiment here and please help me with your answers.
I checked my older posts and I can't see the pictures which were stored through/by/on/at Photobucket.

This is a typical example of an old posting of mine:
Spotted this really old what if model in the nice Great War Museum in Caledon (near Toronto, Canada). The text says it all:
End of old post.

I checked the addresses of the photos in my old post and added to each photo-link this:~original.
And below is the result:
Please, tell me do you see any pictures in the first or in the second part of this post.
If you see the second pair with the revised addresses, please do the same trick with one of your photos on Photobucket and see what happens.
One more time:
The old address of the picture was e.g.:
http://i370.photobucket.com/albums/oo141/canso-forum/text.jpg
I manually revised it to:
http://i370.photobucket.com/albums/oo141/canso-forum/text.jpg~original
Cheers!

P.S. I just tried to restore several pictures in my older posts using the above described trick and they are back...at least for now. I could even restore photos, that are not in my Photobucket-library (I have previously copied them from other posts) and they show again!

Canso, i've just tried it on one of the locked images on my threads and it seems to work on the preview, i did it on one of the pics and left the others unchanged and i could see the pic in the preview, in the middle of the locked pics. It seems like a nice loophole but it means we'd have to do it to all the pics we've ever posted from there... might be useful for the 2017 Whiffies, at least to get the pics visible in the show thread.
Thanks for sharing that fix!

No black magic at all! ;D If you go to your Bucket there are always 4 options under each photo:
1. Email & IM
2. Direct
3. HTML
4. IMG
I copied the "Direct"-address. Then in each and every forum I'm using the "Insert image" button or if there is no button just type img  /img in brackets and insert it. The "Direct"-address has ~original at the end.
That's all. ;)

I've always used the IMG link and i just went back to my F-16W thread and modified the link as you said and the images are showing now so i guess it works with any of the links?
I really don't care that much cause i'd already started using Imgur a while ago so i'm not going back to PB anyway, it's just a shame that so many pics are blocked... the guys at PB must've had a cerebral diarrhea when they thought of doing this wonderful change... :banghead:

... the guys at PB must've had a cerebral diarrhea when they thought of doing this wonderful change... :banghead:
 Yep!
But in their own explanation they wrote:

What is 3rd party hosting?
Photobucket defines 3rd party hosting as the action of embedding an image or photo onto another website.
For example, using the <img> tag to embed or display a JPEG image from your Photobucket account on another website such as a forum, Etsy, eBay auction listings, blog, etc. is definitively 3rd party hosting.

And more from PB:
Direct link: This is the actual web location where your image is stored. Use this link for sites that ask you to insert an image from a web URL.

I used both Direct and IMG links on a lot of pics on lots of forums and sites I went to and I still got shafted by PB!  I'm not wasting any more time or effort with PB and I would hope nobody else does either. But if others want to fix their links and continue using PB, then more power to ya. I've had it with PB!  :banghead:  :banghead:  :banghead:

Or don't use PB at all... like i said before, i' not going back anyway, the ads alone made me dump PB, it took me almost 10 minutes to upload a few images...  :banghead:
EDIT: I've tried the Direct link, doesn't work, just shows the link itself so no use for forums...

I can see both of your modified links, yes.
And here is the proof that it works on photos from other accounts.
Before:
BEST PROP KITBASH
Zenrat's Bristol Blairgowrie
(http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i82/gavinmaillardet/PDRV/Beaufighters/Bristol%20Blairgowrie%208_zpslaxowqlu.jpg)
After:

So yes, it can be used for the Whiffies 2017 (at least). Just don't delete your photos with PB! ;)

What a fantastic example to choose.  ;D

And it works.  I've just gone back through the Wrathchild thread and modified all the links.  It's quicker than replacing them with links to another photo host but it's still a PitA and I won't be doing it to everything and definitely won't be going back to using pb.

...I've tried the Direct link, doesn't work, just shows the link itself so no use for forums...

You'll need to copy the direct link and then put it between (http://and)
You can type that or use the button at the left hand end of the second row of buttons above (below B for Bold).

Ok... never did that before... Now, why do they tell folks the IMG link is the one to use on forums and then do this without any warning?!? Maybe trying to get some suckers to pay the stupid amount of money they're asking for it...

Thanks, Fred.
But i just don't wanna have to deal with PB again, those ads... i close one and another one comes up right away in it's place... then there's another page that pops up and then it takes forever to load the pics already on there... the upload is also very slow.
Sorry, just doesn't cut it for me anymore, i'm done with it, Imgur is fast and pop up free and i don't have to insert those brackets, just a simple copy/paste affair so less time consumed.

Hi Dogfighter!
For previously posted photos that don't show any more use the MANUAL CHANGE OF LINK I described before.
The above photo in your latest post DOES NOT SHOW, because it doesn't have the suffix ~original in the link.
I'm changing this manually and below is the result:
That's it!

:o ;D I posted it during my lunch hour and didn't have the time to check but it was showing on the preview... I used the direct link inside the img brackets like Fred/Zenrat said...

This is showing now on the preview as i'm writing this post, and i just copied the direct link, inserted in the img brackets, just like i did on my previous post...

My pics are still visible.  I've got a theory; I haven't been on photobucket since before the ransom demand.  If I leave it alone, will my pics remain visible?  Or is it just a matter of time before they get around to my account?

I wasn't active on PB for quite some time when they blocked everything, i'd already started using Imgur for a couple of months or so...
Maybe it's the number of views that some profiles get, i don't know... i just know that it sucks!!

It's not showing - at least not in my part of the Universe ;). I see the warning to update your account only.

But if you insert the '~original' text after the 'jpg it appears.

I can't see it in your original post but I can in my quote because I added the '~original' text to your link in the post.

How's this possible? I can see the pic without the mod, on my post and on Canso's post... Why can't others see it?

No I could say the same, but I got hit anyway. I think it depends on the amount of link traffic each account is getting.

Ok, the pic's gone now... it was showing last night, just like when i posted it the first time...
Do they have a way of knowing if pics are being shared and where they're put up?

Well spotted Alastair.

A pity they didn't do an add-on for IE11 too, but it certainly seems to work with Chrome, nice one.  ;D

I'm also able to see avatars that have been blank for ages too, even better.

So, I just got this neat email from Photobucket:

Changes are coming at Photobucket and your feedback is important.

We are conducting a survey of our valued users and have chosen Priority Metrics Group (PMG) to administer the process as an objective third-party. PMG is a well-respected industry leader in the consumer survey space.

Your opinion is critical to driving change in our service offerings and your participation in this survey will help us serve you better. In the next few days you will be receiving a survey from PMG by e-mail. Please take a few moments to complete and return our simple survey.

Thank you for your time!

I sure hope they'll reap the feedback they deserve!  :dalek: :dalek: :dalek:

Ensure it's not a phishing scam piggy-backing on top of the bad feeling that PB generated.

Valued users? Do they mean the handful who kept on paying for the grossly overpriced service or the millions who they royally shafted?

Interestingly, the e-mail that some of our members received was just over two weeks ago.
I have still not received one, thank goodness.
I suspect it is most definitely a scam.

Had another EMail from Photobucket.

Basically a new management team, reduced pricing plans etc. My current subscription doesn't run out until October so it looks as though I might end up staying with them ?
