Title: Avro Arrow F.1 (Finished)
Post by: Devilfish on January 23, 2020, 01:40:07 am
I picked up a 1/48 Hobbycraft Arrow on E-bay a few months ago...

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/48738517813_23d147963d_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2hfRDjD)20190915_200934 (https://flic.kr/p/2hfRDjD) by Paul Carter (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150768292@N05/), on Flickr

So I got some resin for it...

Cockpit, wheel wells and intakes/exhaust

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49365730433_22d84fc72a_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2idhgMk)2020-01-11_09-12-19 (https://flic.kr/p/2idhgMk) by Paul Carter (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150768292@N05/), on Flickr

The only trouble is, I think they were designed for the retooled kit, which this isn't.

Never mind....just takes a bit more work!!

I also bought so reference material

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49377279833_cfac14a2a8_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2ieit1V)20200111_170428 (https://flic.kr/p/2ieit1V) by Paul Carter (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150768292@N05/), on Flickr

First job is to remove the locators for the original cockpit (I say that loosely)
(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49426060578_8ff0eab96d_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2iiBtQf)20200122_214048 (https://flic.kr/p/2iiBtQf) by Paul Carter (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150768292@N05/), on Flickr

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49426530951_cc2c991211_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2iiDTE8)20200122_214414 (https://flic.kr/p/2iiDTE8) by Paul Carter (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150768292@N05/), on Flickr

And cut out the nose wheel bay

And here's my first problem....

The kit item is back to front...or side to side...whatever...it's the wrong way around...

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49426060353_2d3c658e63_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2iiBtLn)20200122_215420 (https://flic.kr/p/2iiBtLn) by Paul Carter (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150768292@N05/), on Flickr

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49426060348_4ea0eab261_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2iiBtLh)20200122_215430 (https://flic.kr/p/2iiBtLh) by Paul Carter (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150768292@N05/), on Flickr

So I've just cut it out "square" and I'll sort it out later...

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49427081087_533ec6ff2a_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2iiGHce)20200122_221253 (https://flic.kr/p/2iiGHce) by Paul Carter (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150768292@N05/), on Flickr

I've also started on the main wheel bays..

An AWESOME machine indeed!

I'm keeping my eye on your build as I have a couple of 1/72 vacform Arrows (thanks Robert ) that I really should build before much longer.

Nice ! I'll be watching this one as well. I have most of those resin upgrade kits, not sure which one I'm missing. I had always wanted to build one operational using them. I also have the newer tooled kit. I recall at the time it was nice, but not a lot of bang for your buck compared to the original !

Cheers

As i couldn't find my Dremel last night, I had to continue by hand, so not as much done as I'd hoped....

Cockpit walls and nose bay fitted....

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49433274917_9ee937b8f3_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2ijfspp)20200123_231237 (https://flic.kr/p/2ijfspp) by Paul Carter (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150768292@N05/), on Flickr

Had to make a top for the nose bay, as it doesn't come with one, due to the way it's moulded.

Well, I didn't expect this to be a simple build, despite, or maybe because of, the simplicity of the kit, but omg!!!!

The fuselage has a warp so big, I swear I saw Capt Kirk!!

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49436104371_47ab6032a8_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2ijuXv6)20200124_214030 (https://flic.kr/p/2ijuXv6) by Paul Carter (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150768292@N05/), on Flickr

And the resin is really thin in places....

This is the cockpit floor.

And then there's the fit.  I had suspected that the resin was for the newer retooled kit, but I didn't expect it to be as different as it is....Nothing fits!

But, I have a cunning plan....

At least for the exhausts.  I will remove the very thin exhaust surrounds and replace them with plactic tube of the correct diameter.   Not sure what to do about the intakes yet....

I would suggest cutting them about here ->

then fill & etc.  Is that not a part of your cunning plan?

If I did that, I might as well use the original kit ones. I might do anyway, as looking at photos of the real thing, they seem to be more rounded top and bottom than either the kit or resin parts are, so surgery will be needed no matter what.

As for the exhausts, I plan to find some larger diameter plastic tube and replace them.

And thus the name Hobbycrap was born!  ;D

They tried, they really did, but they needed better researchers and quality control people. If I recall correctly, they got the flap actuators upside down as well. The old Aurora kit was probably just as good/bad, and it dates from the time the plane was still flying!

Ouch ! Is that ever different ! Remind me when I get home to dig out the new mold kit and see what they fit like !

Luckily mine is the updated old mould, which has them on the bottom, where they are supposed to be.

I suppose it's quite hard to research something when your government ordered all documents destroyed.  Give them their dues, it's an injection moulded Arrow, no matter how bad!

Amen to that ! And they can be built into a nice representation by a little scratch building and beer.

Dug this one out again.  Sanded back the main wheel bays and upper wing until things almost fit.....

Managed to get the wings together....

The issue with the exhausts has been resolved by raiding the spares box, and digging out some F-111 nozzles.

It's around TSR2 size.

I'm beginning to wish I'd taken a bit more time and opened up one of the missile bays.

It's that massive wing that makes her look so big I think ? Mind you being as my favourite period for aircraft is probably 1935 to 1945 most 50's fighters/interceptors look huge

It's more comparable with the Fairey Delta III Chris.

The  type  559 is as big fuselage wise, I  dare say  one  with a big set of Delta wings  would  look the part.

Because of the new wheel bays, I've had to modify the kit undercarriage to fit.
The nose leg got a V shaped top end, as on the original, and a hydraulic strut, as well as having the wheel axle narrowed to more realistic dimensions. Resin Lightning nose wheels were fitted. Also, the cylindrical thing was moved offset the centreline. It's not exactly accurate, but it's better than it was.  I just need to add the landing lights.

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49671873761_a3439ca818_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2iFkkwz)20200318_061320 (https://flic.kr/p/2iFkkwz) by Paul Carter (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150768292@N05/), on Flickr

The main legs were stripped of ancillary struts as the kit has them completely wrong.  The leg was drilled and pinned then fitted, and the first strut refitted in the right place. The other strut was replaced with a hydraulic actuator from the spares box.  I just need to add the resin Lightning main wheels, slightly further apart than the kit ones, as they are a bit bigger...

I'm hoping these spindly long legs will support the weight.

Yea. If I take this to shows (when they start back up), i will have to make a jig for it to sit in while in the box, or it'll snap off.

+1, exactly!

And, of course, how spindly that undercarriage is! I'd be nervous of it collapsing in a stiff breeze, let alone taking the impact of take-off & landing forces! :o
