Yeah taking a ride on a Jimbowyrick1 design I found on Devianart. His design is called Kawadanga Ki198c Felix and was rather"do-able" by bashing an Curtiss Seahawk I have around for quite a while. Also found some Potez 63-11 wings and engine ( nice little radials) and presto! That's another project for an +1 engine project. The other is the Wallaroo. The canopy is from an Brewster Buffalo and the extreme nose is from the slippertank of a HP Victor. Colorscheme will probably be that strange Japanese lilac/purple scheme. Dizzy used this color for his Nakajima "Rufe". But what is the color number used?

Oh I like that!
There were several attempts at Grumman Skyrocket-style aircraft, so why not a Japanese one? That Buffalo canopy feels very 'Zero'.

That Humbrol tone ("HJ4 N.9 Mauve") was from their Authentic range and has been out of production for ages. To my kowledge, there's no direct equivalent. Modelmaster did a "Napoleonic Violet", but this is much too bright and would need some dark grey to be mixed into it.
Here's an article about it: http://www.aviationofjapan.com/2010/06/humbrol-authentics-japanese-air-force.html
Besides, this one is looking very good - and it has that authentic, Japanese touch.

Heh heh heh. Japanese mauve, one of those "can of worms" colours. Your link is interesting reading Dizz. Nothing like basing a colour on written descriptions is there. ;)
I'd just bung some purple into a lot of grey. In fact, I may knock up something Japanese specifically to do just that.
More information here. (http://www.aviationofjapan.com/2015/01/john-haas-mauve-rufe.html)
Love the look of this thing Dave. You either have an excellent eye for what parts work together or we both have very very similar tastes. Maybe both. ;D

As do I

Thanks gentlemen!
Meanwhile I mixed some purple (Humbrol Royal Purple) in a jar revell SM374 and painted a sample: both pictures are in natural sunlight (evening) and was still wet when pictures were taken. The base is a blueish-grey cargofloor from an amt/ertl KC-135. Think this look quite all right. Maybe add a tad more purple....What do you reckon?

More grey IMO. But then I have notoriously iffy colour perception.
-
Not being completely familiar with the mauve in question, but from what I recall of seeing it in the past, I'd agree with zenrat - it needs a bit more grey added, rather than purple.
-
Yep, checked some pictures again (thanks Dizzy). And think you're right. Will add some grey to it.
Thanks, David

Whilst being torn with indecision over what to build next I noticed this on the side of a Hasegawa box.

It's a Mitsubishi Ki-51. The instructions are in Japanese only. Using the Google Translate App tells me this colour is a mix of Blue and Navy Blue but it certainly looks purple to me.

Thanks Zenrat!
I think i've mixed the too lila-lila to a passable greyish-lila. will pivture photo later.
Cheers,
David

I did a web search and found a few Ki-51 builds painted purple. All were of the aircraft on the side of the box which makes me wonder if there is only one photo showing this scheme and it's of that particular plane and that one photo has been used to "prove" that there were purple Japanese paint schemes.
However, just to confuse things further it should be noted that the Nakajima A6M2-N mentioned at the top of the page was an Imperial Japanese Navy aircraft while the Mitsubishi Ki-51 was operated by the Imperial Japanese Army.
And I think they each had their own paint specs and schemes.

Indeed they did and pre-War the forces in mainland China operated on a semi autonomous basis at best so that can add even more confusion.

Think I got about the right hue of grey and Lila...

The Lila on the right is the color I've got at the moment. To compare the Lila with the IJA and IJN grey I've put both tins (xtracolor) close to the testpanel. On the left is the IJA grey and on the left the IJN grey. This is shot in natural sunlight.
What do you guys think?
Meanwhile also a small update:

Puttied the canopy surroundings to be sanded flush. Also noted the fin really need a sanding. It's way too thick!
I've put the wings on and puttied the gap where the wing leading edge meets the fuselage.

That second shade of mauve (with more grey) looks good to me.
As for the underside grey, i'd use the same one I mixed into the lilac/purple. That way you would maintain consistency across upper and lower surfaces.
I might paint the Ki-51 purple straight out of the bottle when I get to building it.

Moved as requested

The right hue looks very good - maybe a bit bright, but monitor display of colors is always misleading.

 Belated congratulations!

Auto focus was kinda out of focus:banghead:

Neat!
It's correctish enough for people to get the reference and that's what's important (along with it being cute).

Great!

Really inventive use of the parts. Nicely done!

Absolutely, I've seen very few attempts at that colour. Well done
-
Now this may be either my eyes or my monitor but I would add a touch more purple.
Looks great though.
