Title: Fairey Rotodyne Gunship
Post by: McColm on July 23, 2019, 12:15:16 pm
I won the 1/72 Italeri  ACH-47 Gunship on eBay and thought that I can use the parts on the Airfix  Fairey Rotodyne to create a Gunship.  The Chinook will be fitted with the inflatable dustbin as used on the SeaKing AEW,  this was a proposal by Boeing for the Royal navy Fleet Air Arm before the SeaKing was selected.

Got a slight problem in fitting the side guns along the fuselage. In the real world F.O.D would prevent any machine guns being fitted forward of the propellers but I can fit the pair of rockets and side machine guns on the pods lower down with the forward facing machine gun leaving the rest of the cargo hold to transport the troops.

Problem solved. I have opened a new window on the starboard side for the mounted machine gun.  By removing the two last windows another pair of machine guns have been added.  This just leaves the gun on the front of the clear glazing and the machine gun on the port entrance.  The landing gear will also come from the ACH-47.

I've added the side fuel tanks from the ACH-47,  with the lumps and bumps that come with the kit,  this is turning out to be a good build.

Oh fudge, I was gonna...

Though in my case I've an AH-1 and she'll be USMC.

Looking forward to the result!

(Once I've moved house that is, G*d knows when that'll be.   :banghead:  )

The more the merrier,  I keep adding bits on  and might even change the rotor blades.

Having received a wrapped kit of the Airfix Rotodyne I'm adding the landing gear and rotors to this build. The machine guns have been replaced with two 105mm guns and a single 40mm gun. The two 105mm guns are either side of the main fuselage,  one protruding through the rear left hand side window whilst the other is in line with the long-range fuel tank. The 40mm gun is poking out through a window that I cut out opposite the front stairs. The Gunship now has a pair of Hamilton 4 bladed propellers. I'm sure that in the real world the propellers would strip paint off the two long-range side fuel tanks. The rear doors have been glued in place but I have left the gaps for ventilation.
