Title: Pond Racer II – Electric Boogaloo 1/72 - Finished Pics Pg 5
Post by: jalles on November 01, 2018, 04:23:02 pm
I’ve always loved the Scaled Composites designed Pond Racer that tried to break the warbird hegemony in the Reno air races. Alas it never performed as hoped but I still think it looked great.

My idea is at some point in the future Reno adds an all-electric class (electric and hybrid propulsion is hot in aviation right now). Burt Rutan, unhappy with what could have been with the Pond Racer decides to revive the design with the help of one of the fledgling electric/hybrid aviation companies.  The twin booms of the Pod Racer, freed of the large engines and associated cooling systems, provides the perfect volume to fill with batteries.

This is going to be another 3D printed, vacuform, scratch build, and boy is it tiny. Maybe not as tiny as pr19_kit’s Midget Mustang, but it’s still small.

It won’t be an exact Pond Racer, the booms will be slightly different and I think I’ll put on some 8 blade, scimitar props but it will be immediately recognizable. If you’re not familiar with it, the Pond Racer looks like this:

The real Pond Racer had all sorts of engine issues, and that finally lead to its end in a crash. 3 liter Nissan engines, I recall.

I like the whole idea of this.

The Pond Racer was one AMAZING device and it's a pity they never sorted the engine issues before it was destroyed.

Not Pond Racer but...
There's a group slowly rebuilding the Tsunami: a scratch built but otherwise rather conventional racer built around a Merlin.

Oh yes!

I saw the Tsunami being re-built at Crystal Airport nr Minneapolis some years ago now, some time in the early 90s maybe? It looked to have been SERIOUSLY bent!

Yeah, the Tsunami is sweet! Another idea that holds promise (at least as a whif, but not in reality) is the Bell & Ross racer.

I doubt I could complete two builds, but that one looks nice too.

Hmm...well the first attempts at vacuforming have been unsuccessful. I can't get the plastic to adhere to the molds down to the bottom of the part. I have an idea I'm going to try, we'll see how it goes.

Here are the 3D printed parts smoothed and ready for vacuforming:

First attempt at vacuforming. Not so good, these parts are pretty much unusable:

Jeepers, that looks like a winner already!

Why not just glue the 3D parts together and call it the model?

In my limited experience making vacuforming parts I found one problem to be getting the plastic hot enough and then keeping it hot during the molding step. If it cools off much at all it doesn’t stretch around the molds properly. Are the molds cold when you lower the plastic onto them? Warming them with heat lamps might help. Or I might be all wet, it’s been a while.

Why not just glue the 3D parts together and call it the model?

I've been thinking about doing that, although I'm worried that the surface won't be consistent enough to scribe panel lines and what not. I'll also want to incorporate a clear canopy, which can't be printed. Because of the toughness of the 3D printed parts, I'm worried PSR isn't going to work very well and getting a canopy integrated gives me the shivers. Although I could be wrong on all count  :-\

Hmm...interesting. Ultimately I got it to work by building air channels under the part that allows the sides to get sucked in, but your idea sounds intriguing. If i encounter issues again I might give it a go.

I'm slowly making progress on this very unique aircraft   ;)

Here's the fuselage halves and the canopy. I've 3D printed some inserts, which I tend to be doing on all of these parts.

The pilot has been a challenge in itself. For one, most of the eligible candidates in the parts box were fighter pilots with oxygen masks and associated flightgear.  That didn't seem to make much sense for a Reno racer that never goes above a couple hundred feet. This guy is from an old Hasegawa UH-60, unfortunately he didn't fit in the tiny Pond Racer cockpit. So his legs were cut off at the knees and repositioned. I wanted his hand on the control column so his arm and hand where also removed and repositioned. The fit in the cockpit is still tight, but I think it will work.

Is there room to move the pilot further back?
Warbird and racer pilots seem to use masks to ensure that they are breathing good air and not exhaust gas. That might not be an issue with an electric racer.

That's looking exceptionally promising.

Your fuselage construction method is very clever (almost very unique.... ;)) Did you scale down the interior 3D print to fit exactly inside the vacforms or file down one of the original 3D prints?

I altered the original 3D file so there was a cutout for the cockpit and the tail wheel, but I didn't have to scale it down. It's the same piece I used for the mold, so the 3D printed part fits snugly inside the vacuformed polystyrene shell. Does that make sense?

It certainly does, yes, and thanks.

After I'd written the question it occurred to me that that method would make most sense, but by then it was too late and I'd posted it.  :banghead:

Finished up the interior.

Here's the pilot, this is one of my better efforts at painting a pilot, which is good because he's pretty visible.

Finally, with the canopy glued in place. As you can see it's a pretty tight space, luckily all my dry fitting paid off and everything fit inside.

Ta!

I've always tried mixing my own blend with my craft paints. The ones I prefer don't have an actual color that works right out of the bottle so I've been experimenting as I go along. Got a little closer last time by adding in a tiny bit of red. Anyway....  this process has left a trail of sort odd colored lil pilots... some look anemic, some look sun burned, etc.  ;D

I use tamiya wooden deck tan when I want a white australian pilot, flesh for pasty white europeans or slavs and custom mix a relevant shade for other races (africans were easy while my attempts at japanese had to be overpainted as they appeared racist).

I'm a little worried about the amount of primer that now resides over the canopy mask. I thought since the Pond Racer will be mostly white, I'd use some white Tamiya primer I had sitting around. Unfortunately white does not cover well, so I had to put on much more than I wanted. What's done is done and now I'll wait until it's finished and I finally strip off the canopy mask to see how bad it is.

Ha, ha, I thought I was building an airplane, but maybe it's just a fancy Rorschach test.

Well hopefully now it looks more like something that flies versus something that kleeves the heads of their opponents.

I've now added the booms, I build a little jig to aid in alignment.

I added some cooling inlets and exhausts ducts. I'm torn over whether it should be electric or internal combustion. I think most of the PSR is done, now I have to figure out how to paint it.

Bit of a boring update really but the propellers have been giving me a little heartache. I'm using some 1/144 resin blades for an E-2C, they're the eight bladed variety. I thought I cleaned them up well, but after a coat of primer they looked pretty poor. I sanded the primer off and did a more thorough clean up. After breaking off some mounting pins, and seeing they weren't that sturdy to begin with, I decided to add brass pins. This meant using a .020 in drill bit to drill a hole in a .035 in wide propeller. There wasn't much clearance and I had to do it sixteen times! I only broke through the side on one or two and they were pretty easy to clean up with some super glue. After a coat of white today they look much better. I'm happy to put that behind me and get on to painting.

Here's the prop hub and the blades.

Those blades are what, 2mm wide?! That’s amazing perseverance and skill. I’d have just said “engine running, you can’t see the blades”

I'd just cut slots in the blades and then use superglue to put the pins into position...

Yeah, it was one of those things that started out as "I'll just do one".  The first one wasn't so bad, so I think "I'll just do a couple more" and then half-way through I'm thinking "Why did I decide to do this?" Well, at least it's done.

Those blades are what, 2mm wide?! That’s amazing perseverance and skill. I’d have just said “engine running, you can’t see the blades”

You've got it, I just measured them and they're 2mm, I should have thought of modeling it with props spinning, it would have saved some time.

I'd just cut slots in the blades and then use superglue to put the pins into position...

Interesting idea, I might have to give that a go the next time I get myself in this situation.

Finally, here are the props all assembled.

Interesting, you haven't "handed" them - with them rotating in opposite directions to overcome "torque".

Interesting, you haven't "handed" them - with them rotating in opposite directions to overcome "torque".

When I was assembling them I was thinking them same thing, I thought maybe the manufacturer of the resin conversion kit was trying to cheap out and only cast one type of propeller blade. I tried putting them on the hub backwards but they didn't look right. Finally I looked at pictures of a Hawkeye, and low and behold, they turn the same direction. If works on a Hawkeye, then I say it works for my Pond Racer.

If the torque is in the right direction maybe it helps the racer make sharper turns around the pylons? Beyond my skills to determine but it sounds good.

This looks crazy awesome!

How cool would it be to get all the Reno air racers together for a group picture. Obviously for logistical reasons it would be pretty much impossible, but it sure would be awesome.  Although your Black Widow Razr would dominate my poor little Pond Racer.

Maybe they could be photographed from the same angle and at the same resolution in front of a plain background. Then some whizz graphics person could meld them all together into one big pic?
