Title: Zvezda Star Destroyer - a new detailing project
Post by: sykotik on August 17, 2018, 11:29:19 pm
Hi everyone

Well, time to bite the bullet and start on the "smaller" of the 2 Star Destroyers I have in my stash (well really, the Bandai mini SD's are the smallest I have but they are not ones I am going to detail). The biggest one is the Korbanth Super Star Destroyer which measures out to be about a meter or so long! The Bandai ones are to go with the SSD. I will build the Korbanth monster one day but I want to tackle the one that requires the least amount of health defying work first. I have cleared some room on my display shelf for the standard SD and there's even some left over for the SSD  ;D

The Zvezda kit needs no introduction as there have been a multitude of these built online. I bought this ages ago but just haven't had the mojo to put in the effort it deserves.

I'll be adding details and of course lighting (which goes without saying really). For AM parts to go with this kit, I have the Falcon 3D printed hangar bay, rubbish chute, shield generators and engine bells - all of which are beautifully made and smooth as a babies behind. I might even go to Shapeways yet and order a set of gun turrets too.

As always, your feedback will be welcomed throughout the build - good or bad. If something looks wrong, say something. As nice as a "good job" etc is, constructive critique is a good way to learn and be a better modeller.

I've started with the engine block and have already removed the smaller molded on piping as they don't connect to the parts that they're meant to. It just looks weird

So this is what Zvezda give you in terms of detail OOB

(https://farm1.staticflickr.com/929/43222560564_697814779a_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/28RqVps)

Nothing wrong with that at all. Once those bells go on, you don't see much unless you're looking. Maskes  you wonder why I bother but I know it's there and so will you

Istarted off by removing the molded on pipes in the middle bit here because they don't even meet up to the parts at the end. They seem pointless and half done, which on a ship this size is noticeable. I have since replaced the stretched sprue pipes I stared off with, with brass rod which looks much better and more uniform

(https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1798/43036393935_16031e2476_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/28yYLxZ)

Now here's what I've added to the surfaces (bear in mind I have only just started and there is a LOT more to do yet! (I am just winging these details BTW)

The cream bits are all cast resin pieces of bits I use a lot of

(https://farm1.staticflickr.com/851/30072652598_72489a71b1_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/MPqcUj)

As you can see in those last 2 pics, I've gone outside what is on the filming model and added an insert to make things a little bit more interesting. I'll be adding some pipes going in later

Anyways, I'll update again once I've finished the other sides

Thanks for stopping in and having a look

True, but it's the use of the word "smaller" that grabs me  :o

Heaven help us if he gets to work on that 1 mtr. long version, it'll have fully working laser cannons!  :o

I shared a useful detailing and upgrade video here (http://www.whatifmodellers.com/index.php/topic,45564.0.html) on the Zvezda ISD

Thanks guys

Scooter - funnily enough, I had your build referenced to me over on another forum and I saw the video you created. It's very nice work!

True, but it's the use of the word "smaller" that grabs me  :o

Heaven help us if he gets to work on that 1 mtr. long version, it'll have fully working laser cannons!  :o

LOL - whilst it maybe 1 meter long, the scale is a lot smaller than 1/2400 like this one. Here's a link to some of the pics I have of the parts etc:
https://flic.kr/s/aHsm874pyQ

No working turrets on that one I'm afraid. Maybe if it was the Randy Cooper Star Destroyer I could make semi 'working' turrets but it would be limited to flashing barrels only. Even then, I'm not sure even I could pull something like that off. It would still be pretty cool though!
I don't have far to go on the back end in regards to detailing. Just a few more pipes and then some lights and it'll be done. I think I'll tackle the bridge next and then who knows. I'll figure it out as I go ;)
Pics will be coming soon
Thanks for looking

Update #2 - almost done with the back end

So, most of the piping has been added and I am happy with how it's coming along. I am still going to add a few more closer to the central leading edge just to busy that up a little more but it won't be a lot.

I drilled out the ends of the engines ready for the lighting to go in. I won't add that until after painting.

I won't talk much and let the pictures tell you what I've done

To my mind it looks a bit busy now with all that pipework.
However, that is prolly because it's brass coloured and so stands out.  I am sure that when its painted it'll look fab.
Whatever, it's certainly a lot of work there.  Good job.

Well, I've done all the detailing that I'm going to do to the back end. I'll be base painting it all black etc shortly and then onto getting the lighting sorted out. I'm not sure which colours I should go for. Ice blue or white for the main thrusters? Warm white for the smaller ones as well.

Thanks guys, and seeing as you asked so nicely, I just took a couple of pictures with a Tamiya Glue Bottle in front. It's not a small ship like usual - this one's definitely bigger than the Yunagi!! I can lay 2 of them, 1 over each side of that back end alone. It's as long as the Merkarva MK3 - barrel and all!

(https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1843/42551179260_770aa9693e_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/27Q6V8J)

As you can see, it's got some paint on it and it looks much more tied together now. I think I got the colour right too!

Anyways, I've started on the bridge and I shall have pics of that hopefully this weekend
I hope the pictures give you a better sense of scale.?

Two things.
1)  The paint does indeed tie it all together nicely.
2)  It's smaller than I expected.

Indeed so, a LOT smaller than I expected, so how the DEVIL do you add all that minute detail? You must be 1/1200 scale yourself..........

It's not as small as it seems. It's 32 cm wide and 7.5cm at it's tallest which given the sizes of my latest few builds is really pretty big. If I can get my fat fingers in there then anyone's can.  TBH - Tweezers and a sharp knife are my best friends for the really small things
It's detailing the body that I am dreading/pondering over the most. There's just sooo much surface area. :o  It doesn't all need bits stuck on but there's a fair amount of space where I'll add some regardless. I'm not doing anything anyone else hasn't already done before  ;D
In the mean time, I shall finish off the bridge and get the neck done etc before worrying about the bigger stuff
Cheers,
Si

The problem with adding detail is knowing when to stop. That's my excuse for not adding much more than is provided in the kit

Time for an update

I've started the bridge and have pretty much finished the face. I may yet go back and add a couple more bits on for good measure.

I have most of the holes drilled ready for fibers to go in.

I've also made a start on the roof section. It's a little bland for my taste so I've started adding details there to. Again, all made up stuff - no references. It just makes it look more interesting

The back end is also now painted and ready to go on. I still have to install the lights but that won't take long. I'll take some lit shots when it's all done

hi all

Work continues with the completion of the roof. I'll have the big X thingy standing up I think. I need to start detailing that part and then add it to the roof. The shield generators have been added since these pictures but I need to fix up a few things  before I can show you.

I made a start on the bottom half of the bridge section last night and opened up 3 ports to which i have run some more piping out from. Granted it's not exactly movie accurate, but its equally as interesting I think

Lovely greeblification work there!

Just seen in AMW that there's a Czech company called Greestrawberry who are doing resin and brass detailing bits for these, including the fiddly flaps that the studio models had around the edge of the engine bells: https://greenstrawberry.cz/star-wars-17?page=1&resultsPerPage=36

thanks Weaver :) I have seen their offerings and they are very nice. They seem to have dropped one of their etched detail frames from the line up though. It was the one frame I thought would be very handy and I probably should have bought them when I had the chance. Oh well.
I am in 2 minds over etched parts - they look great on planes and armour but at the same time, I find them to be a bit too flat and look just stuck on as opposed to being integrated with the ship. I think that's why I've steered clear of them.
I did entertain the paddle thingies but I'm cheap and would prefer to fashion some myself out of styrene if I wanted them.

LOL - I just said how flat the all looked and I still just bought the hangar set - mostly for the small hangar up front

We've all done that  ;D

When I got back into the hobby I thought etch was compulsory  :banghead:  Now I'll use seatbelts and a few other cockpit bits, Yahu's instrument panels for example, but that's it.

yeah, people seem to think a kit is not going to be it's best without some form of after market resin or PE item to enhance it. I came to the conclusion many years ago that they are most certainly not an essential item to have. Granted some things do look better than a kit supplied cockpit for example, but other than that, I can live without it.
Things like the hangar bay are one of those items that actually would be of benefit - I hope! I also think lighting will be much easier with PE too. Time will tell aye
Once I get back from Bogan Island (AKA Bali) I'll hopefully have it in my possession and will put it together

Hey guys

Thought I would show you where I am up to on this before I go on a well deserved holiday for a few weeks.

I've only really just started but it's not a race. I probably won't take any more pics now until the bridge is finished

Hopefully the cutting board will help some of you convey a sense of scale as well

The first set of pics are the walls for the bays underneath which are present on the filming models. I thought that was a cool feature so I did the same, except I opened up another one that wasn't there. All for my own personal tastes

hi guys

It's been a while since I last updated this thread, so time to do so. I have finished detailing the bridge and am about ready to start adding the fiber optic threads and then get it all sealed up.

The main hangar bay has also been started. I have used a mix of Green Strawberry PE and Falcon resin parts as well as some strip styrene here and there, with more to go in due course. The front hangar bay is the GS PE set and looks good. It's all lit, painted and ready to install

So, less talking and more pics I say

Starting with the hangar bays:

(https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1952/43668682530_ddfe6b3bcf_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/29wRpVu)

(https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1937/31612108638_449aa83856_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/QasjxQ)

I will try to meld the TIE fighter bay to the Falcon hangar section but it may not work do well. If not, I will need to scratch build it. I had a heck of a time mounting the SMD's as the wires kept coming off. They are not the best quality SMD's I think

Lastly, the bridge detailing is all but done. I won't be adding anything further to it. Once the paint goes on, it'll look much better and not so busy

Well, that's all the pics I have for now. I am about to start on the neck area and garbage chute etc. I won't add too much detail here....well, maybe a little but not too much

Feel free to comment, critique or suggest

Thanks for stopping in and looking

Till next time

Thanks man. I hope you guys don't to bored  I'm not a fast builder  ;D

I did a lighting test tonight of the bridge and I am happy with how it turned out. I made a number of mistakes on the internals and had numerous electrical issues but I got there in the end.

I've also been cutting away at the body to accommodate the fibers. I've actually finished the whole top but just haven't taken any pics yet because it's not daylight

Those lit pics look incedible, and they don't give you the slightest hint of the model's size. It could be 4" across or 4 MILES!  :o

How big is it anyway?

Thanks guys!
The bridge itself is about 12cm wide by 3cm high at the center. Once everything is together, I'll take a size comparison shot for you

It'll be a few weeks now till another update as I am off to my Mother in Laws inevitable funeral on Tuesday before flying to NZ to spend what will likely be a not so festive Christmas break.

Rest assured, once I have finished the neck off I will be posting some pics. I am in the midst of painting the neck walls and finishing off the detailing to the front panels now. The roof of the bridge is currently drying and should be able to be released from it's clamps tomorrow

Thanks for your interest guys

Have a safe and happy Christmas fellas

2 days back and I have already pretty much finished the bridge and neck section. I'll run a light grey wash over it once everything has dried and sealed proper. There are still a couple of sections I need to hand brush to bring up to spec.

I'll take some lit shots once I have connected the remaining fiber optics.

Hey guys
It's been a while since I last touched this but after numerous side projects (some successful some....not so much ) I figure it was about time to get this going again and maybe even finish it this year - although being over half way through I doubt it. I'd just like to finish it all together really..

So, I have finished detailing the hangar bay and it is currently drying off the black base coat ready for the light strips to be attached. I am waiting on 2 new ones as I screwed up the first set by cutting it in the wrong place. I had the right number of LEDs for the amount of holes but the strip requires another 2 at the end for it to work properly, so the last 2 LEDs didn't light up. Good thing they're cheap! I'll have to black out the last 2 LEDs once I install the new set.
As you can also see, there is a lot of artistic license going into this. None of this stuff is on the filming model but then I am building this for me and not a paying person so it's kind of irrelevant really

The TIE hangar is installed and it actually works. Just need to tidy a few things up and then that's done.

(https://live.staticflickr.com/7910/45932206454_734f2485d5_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2cYSyJ3)

I also painted (badly) the Blockade runner. This will need a lot of touching up before I'm happy with it

(https://live.staticflickr.com/4916/39692003353_aecf65ac40_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/23trTKp)

Still a long way to go yet but hopefully I can keep up some momentum and get something done. I was looking at the photos I took of the Super Star destroyer and started to drool at the thought of starting it. Then I remembered it's resin and there is a fair amount of work to do on it and the drool dried up pretty quickly, but I will start it hopefully once this one's done - if I haven't over detailed myself out by then.

Anyway, that's all I have for now but thanks for sticking around and having a look-see
Cheers
Si

I'm finding I start off with all the right intentions but loss steam after a few months. I know this is not exactly a new phenomenon but it's still a PITA as I have a lot of unfinished projects because of it. Remember that scratch built starship I started using the U Boat hull? Haven't looked at it for a couple of years because I couldn't make up my mind how it was to go together. And because I couldn't make up my mind, my enthusiasm waned and I left it.  :banghead: So annoying

Know where you're coming from! :banghead:

I have a fair collection of unfinished builds beginning to stack up. I reach a point where something is too fiddly/difficult/awkward/delayed & there the build sits, waiting for me to get enthused again. :-\

I really need to start on that pile soon.

Got more work done with the top layer 3/4 finished. I still have more surfacing to do but I'm hoping to knock out a fair bit tonight (if World of Warships doesn't interrupt me)
I won't go to crazy on the roof though but you can see a clear difference between the kit surface and mine. Some might say that's not a good thing but I like it. Besides, once the paint goes on the busyness will disappear. I've glued on the sidewalls and then will drill out the remaining windows. The roof is just sitting on there until I have threaded through the fibers - a task I am not looking forward to.

So, here I am with another update.
The roof is finished - or finished enough for now. It's looking pretty good to me. It's hard trying to keep it all in scale but I think I am doing alright.
A test fit of the bridge and neck was okay but I had to remove some stuff off the back left sidewall to allow the neck to slide all the way in. The fit is not the best - I'll be honest, I'm not sure if it's all me, or part me and part kit or just the kit itself. Either way, I'll have to think carefully about how the final construction is going to go.

I've already had a couple month break from it and I want to be able to put this in next years Expo, so I had best get a shuffle on.
I've just made 2 little hangar bays for the side walls. I'm not sure they actually exist on the actual filming models but I don't care. I like them and the parts look like they should be hangars. VIP hangars in my case. Be interesting to see if anyone actually notices them once it's on display.  ;D

Hi guys
Well, it's been 3 weeks and I've done 5/8ths of bugger all. I have made a start on the back end of the top hull plate which you'll see in a sec. I've not really touched it in this time as I have been building a Tarangus Viggen but that's stalled because I just can't bring myself to do the complex paint job.
I have however think I have settled on a suitable base. It's also going to take some work but it'll be worth it. I just can't bring myself to do all this work on this and cheap out on the base. I certainly won't be making the same mistake as the Venator.

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/48476153116_5f5e307fdc_t.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2gREXro)

I was blabbing on about some small side hangars in one of my last posts somewhere. I don;t think they exist on the filming model but I can safely say I think we're well past that....

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/48476305042_6887750fd6_t.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2gRFJAN)

You can see why I would think to have them though - those spaces look like they're meant to be like this, although I am wondering how much artistic license Zvezda used when tooling this kit

Sorry to say but this is all I have for you.
Till next time
Happy modelling and thanks for looking in

They look like hangar doors to me (or badly detailed vents) & these were big vessels & I'm sure the prop builders would have put hangar doors there if the script had required it (or vents in exactly the same place if the script went in that direction, too). It's an obscure enough location that it could have had multiple uses across different episodes in a series & been explained away by "re-fits" by the producers when the usual fanboy suspects went into their little rants.

I don't think you'll ever understand just how deeply in awe I am of what you can do in this microscopic scale, mate! Brilliant!

You're very kind to say so - thanks mate
I did some more on it today and it's starting to look good. Just bought some styrene sheet as well this afternoon to make a start on the base when it comes time, as well as some brass tube for the stands
The base idea will be just as intense as the ship I think

hi guys
Well, time for another update. Not sure how many more I'll do for a while as I may take a break from this, but not just yet.
I keep looking at how much I've done versus how much is left to do and I start shaking inwardly. Definitely a long term build.

As you can see, I have made a start on the port side. I've installed the mini hangars and they look alright. I tried to dial down the brightness but may need to do more.

Hi guys
It's that time of the fortnight again - yup: update time!
I've been plugging away at yet more side walls and naturally, there is still a heap more to do yet. I did say this will be a loooooong build (ticked over the one year mark already with so much more to do). I sometimes wonder why I do this to myself but for the rest of the time, I love it
I have to remind myself that i still have the other side to do yet as well as the bottom and then the sidewalls. Maybe by 2021 it'll be done.....  :o

As you can see, I still need to add some details to the hull to tie in the sidewalls but that'll happen soon enough.
Anyway, that's all I have for now but I will be back again once I have done something worth showing
Thanks for looking and if you have any suggestions for details etc, I'm open to them
Cheers

I'd be hazarding 2022 at best (you're going to need a break some time) but keep the updates rollin'!

So you're saying that the Sound Transit's Seattle Central Link light rail will come to Tacoma, before this ISD is finished? Lol!

Is looking grand.

I might get mine done before you but then I am just planning on adding the trash chute, upgrading the shield generators and the engines and then light it.
Of course, I haven't started yet and I have never lit a kit before so who knows.

thanks guys
Philip, lighting is not as complex as it seems. There are plenty of drop in lighting kits and its hard to go wrong with them, so you should be fine :)
Hope to see your SD when it's done - or even a WIP?

hey guys
I've started the roof panels now and added some details onto the body to try and blend it al in a bit better. It's slow work but quite rewarding (well, to me it is)
I'll start making my way forward now and finish off this side and then mentally prep myself to start all over again for the other side! Joy

I only took 5 pictures before the light ran out, so that's it till next time. Which incidentally won't likely be until I have finished most of the other side, so another few weeks away.
I'm also going to take the plunge and teach myself how to use Arduino boards, which ought to be interesting. There's heaps of forums about how to do it, so I reckon I'll pick it up easy enough. (famous last words)
Thanks as always for looking. Feel free to comment - good or bad. You don't need too though - the view count tells me if your interested enough.
Cheers
Si

I've run out of things to say about this build.

Just going to sit back and enjoy watching it all come together

I've said all I can, really. So I'll just sit here & drool over the awesomeness, knowing there isn't a snowflake's chance in Hell that I could do what you do without going insane.

Depends on which Hell you're going to.  Hell, MI or Hell Norway, there's a good chance 6 to 8 months out of the year

And I will agree with our senior marsupial on the build and enjoy watching it come together

I'll be honest and say I don't know what you mean by "MI" or "hell Norway". I'm certainly not taking any kind of offense to it - I just don't know what context it's meant in sorry.

There's  town in the state of Michigan named Hell, and apparently a village in Norway also named Hell, but the context was in reply to Wombie about having a snowflake's chance in hell about keeping his sanity doing what you're doing with this star destroyer build

LMAO! I had no idea there was a place named "Hell" in either of those countries
Makes more sense to me now

hi fellas
Time for a quick update. The wife is heading away for a week with the boy, so I shall have lots of spare time to invest in getting some serious work done on this - provided World of Warships doesn't interfere too much. I promise nothing....

I've started work on the "nose" as you'll see. I steered clear of cutting it off and dropping it like others before me. Fair enough if I was replicating the studio build but it's not necessary here. I realised I had cut out the backing board where the front roof sits thinking there would be something sitting in front of it - there is, but it's not what I thought. A quick sheet of styrene fixed that and I shall add some detail to it in due course. My intention is to have some pipes running back over the edge up into the cavity above it.
Time will tell if that will be something that could work as the roofs will be the last thing to be glued on after the fibers have gone in.
Still lots of detail to add to the rest of the surface but I am getting there slowly but surely

The rear side roofs are also completed and ready to go on. They were a nice quick and easy job - well, in consideration of everything else they were

Well, that's all I have for now, but hopefully the next update will be better
As always, thanks for stopping by and having a look

Every time I look at pics of this amazing project I totally lose my sense of scale.

It always looks as if it's a mile and a half long at the very least!  :o
