Title: Re: FV521AS Warrior 90mm Recce/Fire Support Vehicle - Finished! (pic's pg.3)
Post by: Old Wombat on September 30, 2016, 09:58:08 am
The FV521AS Warrior 90mm Recce/Fire Support Vehicle is an Australian development of the British FV500 Warrior MICV family of vehicles utilising the 90mm Cockerill-gunned Cadillac-Gage turret of the LAV-150 series of vehicles.

Photo's would have been forthcoming tonight but, for some inexplicable reason, my camera battery was dead when I went to take the pic's.

Maybe, if I get time between "Honey-do's" & work, tomorrow.

Once again my armour ignorance means I know not what is whiffy about this.
Looks good though.

Is it me (or the beer) or does the turret look like an elephants head?

Zen,    its several things,  our esteemed Aussie colleagues don't use warrior, and the turret's been seriously upgraded, normally its a 30mm AC in a much smaller one.  But its also a cunning play on the fact that they've done similar things by adding turrets to M113 apcs in the past to give fire support vehicles.   ( and that's just what I can spot, there may be, other things as well.)

What's that spiral thingie at the breech end of the main gun please?

It looks as if someone has given the muzzle brake a BIG twist!  ;D

It's a sleeve to keep dust & dirt out of the recoil damping mechanism of the gun. It'll look like canvas when it's painted.

Actually the turret is narrower than the standard Warrior turret (although the turret ring is slightly larger) but a bit longer with the bustle. Otherwise on the money.

Splendid idea: the LAV-150 turret really suits it.

I've often pondered on fitting a Scorpion turret to a Warrior hull....

Another thing that strikes me is that the Warrior hull is a pretty good starting point for a '1940s Merkava' type medium tank, such as appears in Tony Williams' The Foresight War. Stripped back to basics, it looks very much as if it came from the same drawing board as the Vickers Medium, just a few years later.

Back at the bench (dining table) for the 1st time since a few days before Christmas with this build.

Mostly smaller bits to add on before the primer coat goes on, then I'll have to think about a camo scheme.

Not much progress, I'm having trouble getting time to set up my paint table & airbrush in the garage (People keep insisting on parking their cars in it!) but I've done this with the ol' rattle can tamiya grey primer;

Looking at all the over-spray, I think I've worked out a solution that doesn't involve tonnes (metricised "tons" ;D ) of masking. However, this time I'll stick with weathering & maybe something a little different. ;)

Looks like a deadly combination to me, the pair of them ! Excellent work. One of my favourite pieces of armour so far. The gun looks so right on that chassis. I'm going to save this idea for an M113 in CDN Army service. Great job on all the details as well, the netting and the cooler are nice touches for sure. Also get a kick out of the left hand drive warning label !

Thanks to all of you, gentlemen, & to Rheged, for the Whiffie nomination!

rickshaw: The camo net is some lace mesh I bought about 8 years ago at the Mt Barker Spotlight store (materials, curtains, bedding, craft, kitchenware suppliers). I've used it for camo netting & as fencing mesh. I think it's nylon or similar as it doesn't soften when wet but does take acrylic paint nicely. I've got more than I think I'll ever use, if you want some let me know.

Yep; window screen, (square) net curtains stiffened with paint, all have their places and uses.

The bridal tulle has an Hexagonal weave, as you can see from the photos, so it's good for chicken netting in some applications.

So is the mesh found in coffee drip-brew machine strainers, perfect for radiator fronts etc in 1/72
