Ooh! I kinda like that one! The hex pattern reminds me of the (old) disruptive pattern on the canvas covers for Aust. Army vehicles.

An instant Whif-in-a-box by the description:

FROG - RAAF / USAF BOEING B-47 STRATO - JET (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/FROG-RAAF-USAF-BOEING-B-47-STRATO-JET/271227757381?_trksid=p2045573.m2102&_trkparms=aid%3D555001%26algo%3DPW.CURRENT%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D277%26meid%3D8683911386517843406%26pid%3D100034%26prg%3D1146%26rk%3D3%26sd%3D271183011882%26)

Has to be, as no B-47 flew in RAAF colours, although the US did offer the B-47 as an "interim" bomber to replace the Canberra in RAAF service until the F-111 became available.  Two aircraft toured downunder as a bit of blatant politiking during the 1963 federal election but the type was complete unsuitable for RAAF use in reality.

There's an 1:48 scratchbuilt one:

And some discussion about the aircraft, and the respctive kit from Poland:

http://www.whatifmodelers.com/index.php/topic,10234.0/highlight,pzl+230.html

And this one is probably the one you refer to?

Never heard of it before, but it looks nice/odd/interesting. Could imagine that a 4-tone cammo paint scheme and some ordnance could suit it well?

Dizzyfugu,

I picked one of those up and found it a rather well done little kit.  Nothing terribly fancy and definitely a "garage/ short run" rendering but rather crisply done for all that said.

Anyone know about THIS from Poland?

He does (did?) an AEW.3 as well which I have, the castings look nice, with fine engraved detail. One drawback is that the fuselage halves are solid, cast in a mould that was open on the mating surface, so this surface is uneven and will need careful sanding to make the halves fit.
The instructions don't identify who made the kit.

Caveat Emptor:

There is something that doesn't quite hang true with this seller.
The seller has had a number of items up over the last few weeks that have more than a passing resemblance to primarily ANIGRAND (and also suspicions of others)  1/144 main kits  or bonus items with or without conversion.

They don't look all that accurate either (as if this would concern US here of course  ;D) Something odd about the shape of the cockpit/nose of his Belfast and the nose radome on his AEW Comet is MILES too long.

That's right - it may look like a What If but it was real. The prototype was completed in November 1939 and was test flown in 1940. According to Bill Gunston's "Encyclopedia of Russian Aircraft" the all round performance was outstanding but the DBLK was unable to displace the Il-4 in production.

I'd have been very tempted by this, despite the price but, fortunately, the listing has ended  ;D

Well spotted - I looked at this a couple of times, because the colour scheme made me wonder about converting a Comet into the Soviet Grigorovich DG-55, but I never noticed the badge on the nose - - -

I actually have one of these.  The decals are quite nice and will certainly make for an eye catching F-106.

The same company also does "Thunderbird P-51 Mustangs" and those too look great.

Maybe Bird / White Cat have improved BUT I bought their V-1 Wotan 1/72 WCM Bausatz rar selten and it was a dogs breakfast - it would have been nice if the round parts were round :) , unfortunately their TA183 nightfigher was similar. I onsold both on ebay. The same applies to their Flugscheibe RFZ-2 "Wärmflasche" if you look at their photo. I love the look of their subjects just not game to try again.

Well yeah, the US Navy was cheap like that at times.  Budgets being tight and all - what with the construction of all those new super carriers and such.  So, yeah, sometimes the vendors they used for their aircraft marking decals were pretty cheap..

That's pretty neat. Looks old, or they used really old decals.

AFAIK it is rare that such things pop up - as a whif AND in decent quality. Also very different how well and for how much they sell - normally, it is a pity what sellers get for their effort. Unless you have/put swatikas on the kit, then you can be certain that some target groups (esp. in the USA) get hooked.

This seller had/has some other nice whifs online, too, like an XP-56 in a similar livery.

I started an RCAF Tiger Scheme CF-104, '833', the very first 'all over' Tiger scheme, back in  1970, but didn't finish it till 1997, 26 years, one job, three houses and two wives later.  ;D ;)

Similar things used to happen regularly on my model railway layout.
I discovered that if you cut the bases from the 1/72 Airfix soldiers you could dramatically reduce the risk of derailment when you ran them over.

Or catch on something and pull the ac nose first into the ground! Easy defense against ground attack, just lay cables and hooks along the ground....

Well, here's something you don't see every day!

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Experimental-Twin-Tailed-T-33-Jet-1-72-Airfix-Revell-Monogram-Hasegawa-/152154123144?hash=item236d17ab88:g:QD4AAOSwRQlXeYjg

Now, upon first glance a twin tailed T-33 seems quite the WhIf.  A bit of Googling though, and it turns out to be a real machine - if something of a one-off and only created out in the field.

http://www.tailsthroughtime.com/2009_10_01_archive.html - look to about the middle of the page.

Still though, I think it belongs here.

Interesting camo scheme on the Beaufighter in this listing:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Bristol-Beaufighter-MkX-RD439-RAF-1-72-kit-built-finished-for-display/311681158403?_trksid=p2047675.c100005.m1851&_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIC.MBE%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D38813%26meid%3D0370116e5e804edca43f74a42ca89735%26pid%3D100005%26rk%3D3%26rkt%3D6%26sd%3D311681135923

Pity the build and paint quality is so poor - what's the builder used to paint it? A toilet brush?

The base and vehicles are also quite nice.  Busy.

There's also a Testors Swift - markings from the 1990s release for an FR5 but the kit is supposedly an F4 and wrong for that too.

(don't want to steal ebay's photos)
Those are T-28 and T-35 russian tanks in 1/87 by Kopro/Premo, maybe now Roco.
Doubtless whifs (and absurd ones, IMO).
BUT, my question is: do other members think is correct to SELL whifs without telling they are fantasy?

They look like toys to me, not models, &, as we all know, toys can look a bit like real things without having to be really anything.

I agree with Old Wombat that if selling toys then it's a different market and therefore you don't need to note it. However if selling it as a scale model then you definitely need some sort of note eg : What If Model or Project, something along those lines anyway. Not everyone is aware of these things especially if dabbling in a subject they don't usually do. My knowledge of armour subjects for instance is quite basic, especially post WWII.

Those are being sold as models (on ebay.de the main category Modellbau is entirely separate from the Spielzeug one) and the kits/models they originate from are considered models. He is offering those and many others as "scratchbuilt", "only one in the world".
BTW the T-28 and T-35 tanks he used are pre-war russian mult-turret tanks, cumbersome and quite useless:

I pity the loader and the gunner though - there's no place left in the turret for them to even stand - let alone be out of the gun's recoil...

They're making copies of your models and selling them??  :banghead: (or better, offering to make them if a buyer is found)
BTW, I have seen already since a few years philippine sellers of wood models made to order.
What make me suspicious is that the delivery time is OVER 2 months, while the delay for asking an ebay refund, if I am not wrong, is 2 months.
Title: Re: Whiffs on Ebay
Post by: Dizzyfugu on May 31, 2017, 08:09:24 am
I already checked options. Sad thing is (as with any large online platform) that you can only file a complain through a standardized process, and ebay does not care for the sources of a seller's picture material. If it's "stolen" from another ebay offer, then you can intervene. But if the seller uses 3rd party material like mine, ebay stays away and tells you to contact either the owner of the original artwork and/or settle it with the seller. Full support of public order ('sarcasm off*).

Anyway, I contacted the seller and set up a deadline, before I take official measures.

Had a similar case on ebay some time ago with looted pics from an anime figure of mine, a customized stock PVC figure/statue. This case is new. While I do not mind a large scale wooden copy of my creation, it's about the abuse of the picture material - without asking. Royalties would be approriate, though.

yip artist Karen McAllister created the artwork profiles and box for the Predator and forthcoming Sebel Lynx resin kits. I have passed casting over to a third party so awaiting deliveries (the first pair of production Predators have been set aside for Kit and Jim)

I will be revamping SpotOn resins over the coming months, meaning basically setting up a separate entity where I create the masters leaving others to mould, collate and distribute the kits. Hopefully this will mean the models actually being available as well as a wider market presence

cheers, Joe

just a snippet, Karen noticed something I hadn't been aware of previously re the Predator Mockup, the aircraft was covered in 'proper' stencils as well as extensive 'no step' areas on the upper fuselage :)

Thank you. I considered intervening (or asking for royalties...), but in the description the seller states that the original boxes are gone and that the kits have been packaged in other surplus boxes, with an individual picture. The other Fury's box art is "wrong", too, so I kept silent - but I wonder why the slight differences (single seater, turboprop with six blade propeller...) were ignored?

Considering the net is full of scans of nearly every boxing of every kit imaginable (not to mention completed OOB builds), saying that the only way to depict what can be built from the sprues is to use a picture of a kitbash is, well, not going to fly (pun intended).

If there is no box, then I would at the very least expect sprue shots, as without box there is a big chance of something having gone missing along the years. Some sellers even include the sprue shots whenever they're selling open box items, so unfortunately this sounds like a scam.

And one has to wonder about the turret ring diameter.

Yup, doesn't quite work. Not sure if a Pz III turret would work ? It was a little smaller then the IV's but not that much. Mind you a 50mm main gun would balance things up a bit.

Quite nicely done though, but a tad implausible as the B2 was meant to be a low level version, wasn't it?

Indeed!  A late-70s Mk.2 with SRAMs might be quite nice though...

Been there, done that.  Found the model a few days back and it'll need some repair work.  Did it when I did the Avro Atlantic back in 2007.

Anyhoo, found this twin tail Mosquito.  Don't know what the tailplanes are from but they're Lacaster fins.  Original Airfix Mosquito FB.IV too.

He's right.  It has been built, it is finished and you could display it.  However, claiming the standard to which it is built is "good" is bollocks.

In a very old Pilot magazine I once read an article by a bloke who owned a BD-5J.  According to the story (and my memory - not always accurate), when these wee jets came out, he had just retired from the Air Force.  He wasn't ready to give up flying, so he bought a BD-5J for personal shenanigans.   The USAF bought three BD-5Js to evaluate, crashed them all, and wanted him to donate his aircraft to them so they could complete their evaluation!  He declined.

The US Navy also used a BD-5 in the mid-70s to model a cruise-missile for specification of the Tomahawk program.

Another oddity with the BD-5 was that Bede's engineer at the time was... Jim Rutan!  He worked on the '5J conversion during the day and his own VariViggen in the evenings.

"Burt" Rutan. "Jim" Bede.

But I am sure Rutan tries not to think about Bede much

"Burt" Rutan. "Jim" Bede.

Oops!  Some day I'll get Bob Rutan's name right...

Found a snippet from AvWeek in 1975 that concludes with a few near-WHIFs:

Quote
USAF will evaluate the Bede BD-5J single-seat light jet as a potential low-cost transition and profciency trainer for the General Dynamics F-16 air combat fighter. Evaluation, with four aircraft. will begin in April at Edwards AFB. Calif.   [ AS.12 note: some testing was later planned at Nellis AFB to permit TAC pilots to evaluate it as an aggressor ]

The aircraft, produced in both kit and finished form by Bede Aircraft. Inc. Newton, Kan. also is being studied by a number of foreign nations. It has been viewed by U. S. Navy pilots during a demonstration at the Naval Air Test Center at Patuxent, Md.

Boeing has evaluated the aircraft as a potential low-cost drone or remotely piloted vehicle and expressions of interest for such an aircraft have been received from both the U. S. Army and Israel. Other nations that have expressed interest include Pakistan. which has asked for quotations on an initial order for 50, Iran and several South American nations.

Back before I quit Warhammer 40K, if there was "PR@ P41N73D L@@K" (an expression overused to the point that peddlers had to use l337sp34k to bypass ebay filtering, because literally anything with even a drop of paint was advertised as "pro painted" and most also "out of production" aka "@@P V3RY R4R3" even if it was available in retail) in the ad header, it usually meant that various cans of paint had obviously fallen on top of the miniature, because even I could not paint as sloppily even if I tried. All too often these cans had contained paints that would not yield to Fairy Power Spray (which is usually enough to dissolve even superglue and styrene joints), sometimes not even brake fluid.

Guess the practice has now been carried over to model kits. ;D

They merely failed to state that they were professional house painters or crash repair spray painters, & used the same equipment & techniques on the models as they did in their day jobs. ;)

It's been going on in Model Kit Land for quite some time, too - especially in the Sci Fi genre. :banghead:

While the designation is incorrect, the aircraft is real:

The 'MiG-23' designation was actually given to it officially in the West and the 'Flipper' reporting name came from NATO's ASCC, so it's not even the kit company's fault.

I've got one too, for nostalgia reasons since I built and screwed up one back in the day.
