Title: YX-15B
Post by: Eddie M. on March 25, 2006, 01:59:49 PM
Some time ago, Shasper shared a shuttle type plane with us and it has held my imagination ever since. Here's what I did with some of my spare time while the board was down. A very special thank you to all who helped get it up and back running.  B)

This is F-18 mixed with F-22, with a little Mirage for conformal tanks. I shortened the Hornet landing gear to get it down low like the X-15. It's a shame I can't work on some F-104 wingtip tanks. ;) I also reversed the canopy to give it that F-16 look. Why, I don't know. The voices......, they tell me what to do........  ;)

Believe it or not, I have a bit of a back story. This plane was result of the cancellilation of the Shuttle program. Near earth experiments were taken over by the YX-15B. The launch vehicle would be the 747 used for ferrying the now defunct Shuttle. Launch from modified supports, similiar to those used for ferrying the Shuttle.that's how I see it. ;)

Someday, you and I are going to go garage-sale-hopping in TX so I can see you in action, picking out discarded models for parts to go on such fantastic creations that no one else can visualize.

Must be hard to get a focused shot of this bird as she looks like a high-speed streak even when sitting still.

So, with your back-story, are we going to see a white upper finish with perhaps all black undersides?  I have some NASA decals if you need 'em.

 this plane already!

Yes, that is the scheme I'll be using. If you have some extra NASA decals, I like to acquire them from you some time. :)

More progress tonight. I halved the Raptor wings and built a new nose out of a Hornet burner can and one half of a KC/135 lox tank. I think it looks more like a hypersonic aircraft with the blunt nose. I've also decided to go gear up.

BUILD one, then!

Maybe just the top curvature of the fuselage could be represented by a sliver of painted white ABS pipe, engraved with a few panel lines and some antennas fixed.

You could go all-out designing and building some mounts/struts and the fuselage sliver could serve as a model stand, yes?

I get to have a little fun today with paint and plastic. I get my birthday as a paid day off, so I'm enjoying it. The only drawback is that my little girl is sick. It's a helpless feeling when they don't feel good.  :(

I did a little more painting and I put the canopy on for looks. A little minor surgury and it will be done. :)

This is sheer styrene magic!

But please don't tell me you're simply chucking your model up in the Texas sky for the in-flight shots?  Oh, wait: I see the thread!

I took out the hanging lines and the object in the upper right hand corner (whatever it had been).  April 14 Edit: Removed the lines from the belly, too.

Giggling myself stupid at the image of trying to juggle a model and a camera and making the choice of which one you want to save from hitting the deck.

perfect example of how simple lines and simple paint can look so stunning. Elegance is always classy.

Flew over Florida this morning but it was moving so fast, I couldn't get a clear shot of it; sorry about the slight motion blur.

Man, it was fast but I could have sworn I heard NO engine noise whatsoever----weird!

Was like it was coming in on a glide or something.  Like the space shuttle does.

[not sure how I managed to get the two different views from one perspective but, hey, these things happen!]

The rear cockpit cover is done. I envision this one having an ejection seat that fires back at a 45 degree angle and that cockpit cover is the egress path. ^_^

Also, my 1:48 Skyraider for size comparision. :)

OK, the cockpit cover is THE perfect touch!  It really makes a wonderful jet even better!

I'm not sure how you can still amaze me even when I'm expecting to be amazed so I'm already thinking yea sure it's gonna be amazing but then POW! I'm totally amazed...well then it's kind of amazing to be amazed at being amazed...err..or something like that     :dum:

Thank you everyone for the encouraging words. B) Sorry Shaper, no stack this time. It's too big. Maybe with a smaller plane. :) What I did do is take some advice from JHM and build my own base for my creation. It's just a basic fuselage that my Hyper Hornet can piggy back on. I think it will work. :) Thanks Man Ho!

Thanks Gents! B) I finished one side of my "support" aircraft. I used self adhesive white labels that I painted blue for the windows. I used them because of their shape. Maybe one day I'll detail the inside with seats and tray tables with pretty stew...oh sorry, flight attendants bringing a nice bloody mary. Maybe if I live to be 80.... ;)

Your wish is my command oh mightly Man Ho. ;)  :)  This one is done! Gotta love a build that takes less than 6 months. :P Thanks to Shasper for the inspiration on the Hyper Hornet and JHM for the idea of the aircraft section as a base. B) It's always fun when I'm able to break new ground. :D

Wow.

Seriously fabulous Eddie - this really has to be one of my favourite builds ever....like....EVER EVER.  As in, from the creation of model kits to the present.

Bearing in mind that i have no interest in the whole "space" thing (Real life stuff anyway, shuttles and rockets leave me cold, but x-wings and tie fighters?  That's quite another matter), that's really saying something!

You notice that when you look at her from the side she kind looks like a Sepecat Jaguar?

Except that this looks fast, obviously   :D

Love it Eddie - LOVE IT!

Spaceplane, a slight return.....

Our shop cat, Puss, knocked this one to the floor (my fault. no harm, no foul.) and did some damage to the plave part of it. I'm going to fix it up, but with a few modifications.

The last time I took a photo of it..

That is because they are working up to another round of extortion.

"Well Mr Chris, at the level of service you currently have we can't guarantee one of our service desk operatives will be able to get round to looking into your issues before your account expires in November.  Of course, if you were to upgrade to our super gold deluxe package..."
