Title: Naval Gripen
Post by: anthonyp on April 14, 2005, 11:01:45 AM
Here's my 1/72 Revell Gripen.  It's an earlier model of the plane, as the landing gear seem a bit... stockier than I think they really are, and the sidewinder rails are a lot shorter than what the actual plane is.

I figure this plane began to replace the Sea Viggens about 1996.  I added some under fuselage fins and a tailhook for carrier operations.  Nothing was done to the main gear as it looked already beefy enough for carrier operations.  I also repositioned an antennae or two to the top of the plane.

Brilliant Anthony, I have the same ideas for a lot of the stuff you've posted

Yeap the original Revell Gripen is a bit shorter and with a slighty different profile than the later Italeri/Revell production version (Have found the ideal use for the early version, but thats staying under wraps for the time being as doing a joint project with Aircav & MatinH).

The Gripens STOL performance for short field work in Sweeden would probably have led to a naval version had sweeden still kept a sea going navy (reduced now to coastal force for self defence rather than power projection), however i do seem to remember some discussion of a Sweedish carrier concepts in the 50's.

Cheers

Oh man that is extra cool, and anyone who know me, knows I a Gripen freak. I have a half dozen or more in the stach with several pounds of add ons to develop the various versions of RCN Gripens for Canada's new carrier. (along with the supporting Ospreys, RCF Hockum attack chopper and F-35's and so on)

For ships, you could always do an updated version of the aircraft-carrying monitor(s) they had back in the 20's.  I seem to remember that Hybrid Warships had info on it/them.

Time to scratchbuild the 1:72 carrier, too!    ;)

I like your Sea Gripen very much!!!

that's funny!! I had the same idea few month ago.

But in my mind, the Sea Gripen will be build for an hypothetic European Union Army (Navy^_^ )  to be carried by french and britich CV to complete the Rafale and the F-35K, in CAS missions for exemple.

For the moment, I only rebuilt a part of the nose (the Italeri 1/72 one is a little wrong). But if I have the time to finish it, I give you some pictures.

PS: I apologize if my english is wrong, it is not my born langage

For use by the Swedish Navy, how about using something like the triple-launcher for Brimstone to carry air-launched RBS-17 anti-ship missiles?  They both use the same basic airframe after all.

Indeed the RBS-17 looks like a Hellfire.
I think in 1/72 scale no difference between those 2 models can be seen.

But I haven't heard of any kit with the Brimstone triple-launcher, even if it's still possible to scratch-build it. ;)
