This is the very old Ju 388 AIRMODEL Vacu Kit, the fuselage should be completed with the old Matchbox Kit of the 188 , a kit that is one of the finest on my ever made list.
IMG_20250412_075233.jpg
So i started with some additional parts of sheet in one side of the fuselage ( it would be better to do that at both sides as i found out later ).
IMG_20250412_075204.jpg
Today i did step two and cut the parts out
and start the sanding job.

I'm not shure what kind of engines to build for this, maybe some reverse rotating twin props with very big blades and open spinner.
I had the luck to find some of the original Matchbox Kits. I don't know why they are so easy to get here, it's a phantastic box Art and a real nice kit i think.

As a lover of Junkers twins Herr Noizer mate I'll be keeping a good eye on this π π
mmmhhh, and what do you think about a four engine Junkers ?
I just built one. ;D

OK, this is made very well, so i have to discover something else ...

π π€£
I was gonna say Kit just built one but he neat me to it ;D
Nothing says you can't do one yourself.
Maybe change the engines; perhaps a jet version?
Then paint it as a night bomber, just so's it's a bit different?
Something like this.... I think a combi of that would be very good. π

Oh yeah.
Someone suggested that prop layout for my Ju 588, but with those HUMUNGUOUS radiators on the front of the DB 610s it didn't really need it.
Yes, those would combine very well.
I still like that build of Dizzys'.
I have glued some additional stripes of sheet in the middle, so the parts can be fixed together very easy and adjusted to the correct measure.
Unfortunately i made a big mistake with the clear parts and ordered a replacement :banghead:
IMG_20250424_194339.jpg
IMG_20250425_012103.jpg
I did some research in my spare parts yard and found the perfect spinners for the engines.
They are 11,5 mm big, the original diameter is only 7mm  .
These droptanks at the left will be a good material to make the spinners
IMG_20250425_031822427.jpg
They will fit perfect in the rings at the front.
IMG_20250425_032835493.jpg
I have some pieces of the italeri 188 kit left, so i can use the complete rear wings and the wheels who are much bigger + better than the funny Matchbox things ( green ) ...
IMG_20250425_135629.jpg
See now..i knew this was gonna be well worth watching π π π

Far too short. My money's on CHINA (the barely visible bits of the letters seem to match).
But these later releases were being openly made in China. Why would they hide that?
My money is on that originally saying where they were being made BEFORE the moulds were sent to China.

Only other option that I can think of that might fit is INDIA.
One of us needs to buy an original release Matchbox Ju 188 in order to see where it was made...
:o
Or, look on Evil-Bay.
This is the back of the original release box. Note bottom left.
But I can't find any sprue shots of an original release kit which clearly shows the relevant area.
Well, having found these images (not the same sprues but showing similar signs of alteration) , I can only assume that the sprues that killnoizer has are at least 3rd gen
1st image showing MADE IN ENGLAND
(https://www.modellversium.de/kit/bilder/1/0/3/13103-210684.jpg)
2nd image showing alterations to the "MADE IN ..." panel similar to killnoizer's but they've taken out "MADE" & the location (which is much shorter than the "ENGLAND" in the above image.
And obvious signs that the MADE IN ENGLAND was removed much more professionally.
Weird, but there you go!
In 1982, Lesney Products & Co. Ltd. sold the scale model arm to Universal Holdings/Universal Toys of Hong Kong, who moved the Matchbox brand and tooling to Macau.
In 1991 Tyco bought Matchbox but weren't interested in the plastic model end, Revell Germany bought the rights to the Matchbox molds.
I found images of a later generation Matchbox box with "printed in Germany" on it. No mention of where the actual contents were made though.

Some where definitely made in China, but later production was I think in Poland? When Matchbox parts are in a Revell box it normally says where they are made. I don't think the Ju188 was released in a Revell box though.
Colin
I've had a couple of "Matchbox" kits which left a Chinese (or maybe Macau or Hong Kong) factory through the back door. The boxes and instructions were matchbox clones with Chinese script. They had dry rub transfers, some missing locator pins, some flash, and tiny metal tubes of glue.
They were a Wessex and a MysterΓ©. The MysterΓ© was unbuildable.
Back to the main topic, today i have the fun to cut out the new clear parts and try to get them together with the cockpit section. Not easy , i have to push some corners in shape but don't know which way to do that.
IMG_20250501_192343.jpg
Well done killnoizer! l have a early Special Hobby Ju388K/L in the stash with a dud canopy. Going to go in the opposite direction and work an Italeri Ju188 canopy on to the 388. Mine will be done as a night bomber I think.
That doesn't look an easy job at all! Is the canopy vacformed as well?
Quote from: PR19_Kit on May 01, 2025, 12:37:26 PMThat doesn't look an easy job at all! Is the canopy vacformed as well?
Yes, sadly ... That is the hardest part i think, and i want to build another one.
The clear plastic is made of strange Material, not made for sanding the edges π΅οΏ½π«
Ouch, that's NO fun! :(
Forming the canopy is tested, and went good so far

Just a candle and the back of a cup to change the form will do the job.
Left side is the correct shape with narrow edges, on the right is the original part :
IMG_20250504_175224.jpg
The main project will be original, but i invent some double props and air vented spinners.
IMG_20250505_015935.jpg
IMG_20250505_020014.jpg
Those props fit perfect into the engines π
That's incredible work on the canopy! :o
Rather you than me!
Custom modified CLEAR PARTS !!!
I second Kits comment Herr Noizer mate ;D ;D
Very nicely done βοΈ π
Clear parts are my Waterloo in scale building π΅ after a couple of other lost battles...
Maybe the spinners are a bit to long , i am to lazy for a change of them ( today ).
Speechless as far as the candles vs canopies goes. And mortally impressed.
Hey, that works very good . I was realy surprised .
Yesterday i fixed the wings together, added some big air intakes on the engines and place some putty on the fuselage.
IMG_20250506_215113.jpg
Early morning and a new idea !
I build a high precision tool at the kitchen table to engrave straight lines into the spinner caps.
IMG_20250507_094218690.jpg
It's a hardcover of the fellowship of the ring
Nothing can go wrong if you have that book with you, and so the lines came out very good at the first coffee in the morning ( free day after two very hard days ).

Innovation at its finest! ;D
...and proper use of resources
VERY clever, I can tell you're an engineer. ;D
Multi adjustable - just make a note of which page you used for which build.
If I tried that candle bit it would have caught fire! But that's just me!
Quote from: kerick on May 07, 2025, 02:46:32 PMIf I tried that candle bit it would have caught fire! But that's just me!
You are absolutely correct, the candle must be burning to do the job
Nicely done.
great solution for the scribing... all the major parts are coming along nicely
This evening i did a lot of sanding and work on the main part of the cancel.
Soften the clear part with the candle and cool it down on metal.
Good tools are to see in the picture π΅οΏ½π«
.
Ehm, maybe a bit late to the party but I have vacuum formed reproductions canopies for 1/72 ju-288 and -388 available. The plastic is the non-yellowing type.

I have one in spare, thank you
but maybe you can show us some pictures?
Today i put the spinner parts together on a base plate of sheet, they fit exactly in the engines and i glued them together.
IMG_20250529_195016.jpg
I found some props left over from a He 111z and cut the blades off.

The engines and the spinners together will be good to handle for the following work...
Cool - coming along nicely.
