The 2025 Whiffie Awards Show
(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/54345749226_c9f92436f5_b.jpg)
Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the 2025 Whiffie Awards show.
We have another great show to share with you tonight.
The quality of the nominated models is really outstanding and we heard from many members that making choices in the voting was very hard.
For all of you are coming out as winners, know that it is well deserved.
For those who didn't win any prizes this year, know that in many cases the voting was very close.
I would respectfully ask that members refrain from posting comments in this thread until after the show is finished.
Well, the food is served, the whisky is poured(at least mine is...), so without further ado, let's start with the first award.....

QuoteMartin was so convinced it had a winner in its advanced and unconventional XB-51 jet bomber that it launched production before even entering a competitive flyoff with the English Electric Canberra. The company invested in tooling and awarded contracts to suppliers for an initial batch of aircraft.
When the U.S. Air Force selected the Canberra over the XB-51, Martin faced having to write off all that investment and the prospect of losing money despite having the license to build the winning B-57. The company mobilized its lobbyists and appealed to the U.S Air Force which, to avoid the risk of losing the aircraft it wanted – the Canberra – agreed to take a batch of 50 B-51s.
This would allow Martin to recover its costs. But there was a catch. To avoid the threat of the U.S. selection of the Canberra being overturned by Congress, the UK had to agree to take half the aircraft produced.
The U.S. Air Force aircraft were designated B-51 Panthers. This was deemed unsuitable for the Royal Air Force (someone in the Ministry of Supply having had too close an encounter with a German Panzer). So the aircraft supplied to the UK were christened Carlisle B(I).1s.
Previous British bombers had been named after cities, such as Halifax, Lancaster and Stirling, so someone thought that the name of small market town (sorry, city!) in Northwest England was suitable for a small fleet of bombers no-one wanted.
The Royal Air Force assigned the bombers to 617 Sqn. The idea was to operate the orphan aircraft for a few years then quietly retire them. But the Carlisle confounded expectations. The famed squadron's crews were determined their aircraft would not be quietly consigned to history and instead mastered how to use the bomber's high speed at low level to devastating effect.
In a nod to the ruthless gangs of sheep and cattle stealers that raided the border country between England and Scotland and around Carlisle in the 15th and 16th centuries, the 617 Sqn crews began calling their aircraft the "Reiver" for its ability to across borders undetected.
In the end, on both sides of the Atlantic, the unorthodox B-51 was far outlived by the conventional Canberra. But, in its short career with the RAF, the Carlisle acquitted itself well.

Another superb event! My congratulations to all participants, and especially the organisers!
Lost property would like the owner of the '57 Chevy to either reclaim it, or at least explain how they managed to fit it (undamaged) into the backstage broom cupboard. There are also fourteen 10 litre cans of isobutyl alcohol, three demijohns of red fuming nitric acid , and an extremely large quantity of organic aubergine puree unclaimed..........................other than this guests of the academy are to be congratulated on either their restrained behaviour or (more likely) their amazing ability to camouflage the aftermath of their misdeeds.
;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
 Congrats to all winners and nominees!
Thank you for the votes. I am humbled. There are some extraordinarily imaginative ideas and excellent models in there. You all set a high bar! And many thanks to Tom for all the organizational effort. Really makes one feel like part of a community. I haven't had to count a single rivet.
Oh, THAT'S where I put the '57!
Is the spare 409 in the trunk? It was destined for Fred Zenrat, but he may have picked it up by now.
Thank you all very much, it is always a pleasure to share our work with this group of addicted people

I picked up the 409 Kit. Thanks. I can't wait to fit it into a 64 Mustang 2+2.
I left the Red Mercury flasks in its place. Be very very gentle driving the Nomad out of the cupboard.
Thanks Tom, and well done to everyone who posts to the best and most familial forum on the interweb.
Magic stuff Fred, that 409 should REALLY move the Mussie along, and totally p*** off all the Fordies too. ;D
I hope that Red Mercury is the meta-stable isotope, we had LOADS of trouble keeping the Iso-stable stuff inside the containers in the last batch. It just morphed right through the triple container walls and sank down through the ground toward the Earth's core. :(

Some very worthy entries for sure, congrats to those who won in their catergories

We don't show the results of the voting as such, only the winner in each category.

Sorry guys for the late reply but I was away for a while.
As Narses2 has said we never publish the whole results, only the winner for each category. This modelled after what we call "that other award show" that happens at the same time as the whiffies each year.
I have a screenshot of the end result of each poll just before I took them down. This is for the event our moderator wants to check the results and verify that I do not award myself unjustly ;) . This has never happened so far but for the years that I have organized the whiffies, I still have all the results.
TomZ
Great job putting this and some amazing entries.
