Title: BP CAC Defiant VI RAAF 79 Tactical Squadron Burma 1944
Post by: Doug K on September 08, 2023, 03:35:28 AM
My Defiant obsession continues with a development of my Flying Can-opener from North Africa to her jungle-bound (later) sister.

License built by Commonwealth Aircraft Company and upgraded to survive the South East Asian conditions, the Defiant has become the perfect Tactical Support Aircraft. Equipped with its turret for both defence and ground suppression, 4 cannon and two hard points for bombs or drop tacks (in the loiter role).

Model is the usual Airfix Defiant and as I was whiffing a KovozΓ‘vody ProsetΔ—jov Tempest II, I found 2 Sabre noses in the leftovers - so unplanned I thought I'd jump into they Group Build. I hadn't planned to, my Icelandic Merlin-powered Beaufort will not be done in time! Sable nose, larger tail, a Hurricane donated the cannon (not sure what to do with the rest yet!) and Mustang bomb/tank racks. I couldn't figure out how to fit twin cannon in the turret, so gave up on that, though 50 Cals would be fun...
I used this to test some weathering techniques seen on a Model Railway YouTube channel, all done with artists chalks and sealed with matt acrylic varnish. I'm quite pleased at the result.

Sorry, put this in the wrong place, can an admin move it to "Finished Builds"? Thanks
I need to post more often, I'm out of practice!

Napier engined, up-gunned Defiant's seem to be 'a thing', to use current phraseology.

I put twin 0.5s on my Defiant Mk IV, but i can't remember where they came from. My Mk IV was inspired by one of your earlier Defiant's too, it's a self-perpetuating theme.  ;D

Defiants are a sickness, I think I need a 12-point programme.....  ;)

Sabre fits well.  Looks Stukaish.  You should have lowered the engine slightly to improve pilot vision going into a dive...

Yah, it crossed my mind (along with dive brakes) but i needed clearance for that prop!
As it is I used the Tempest wheels to give another mm or so of clearance

Cutting and shutting the wings to "gull" them would have added clearance...

It's not in the "wrong" place. All you need to do is post a link to this thread and 3 of the images into the "Finished Builds" thread as well.

That looks the goods nicely. Pop it into a pylon turn and it would make a useful gunship.
