Title: A submarine of sorts
Post by: kerick on January 09, 2023, 11:12:30 PM
My IPMS club has issued a "get out of your comfort zone" challenge. If you build tanks, build an aircraft. If you build cars, build a ship, etc. Since I build mostly aircraft with a couple of tanks along the way and I had a Lindburg Victor fuselage laying around with no wings I thought either sub or space ship. Also Mr. Fontaine had graciously sent my a big o' box of parts that happened to include a sub conning tower. I took this as the universe telling me to get on with it and started slapping said parts together.  A few other aircraft parts and this is what you get.

The black base is the cover off the back of an old printer with a couple of brass rods.
I managed to finally print some acceptable decals using Hayes Paper Co. decal paper instead of stuff from Hobby Lobby. Maybe it was old but the ink just would not soak in or dry afterwards. This paper worked great and I printed extras of everything just in case.

Hopefully it turns out a little like this.

Blue Meanies are not required and need not apply.

Very cool, love the shape.

I am just not certain about the tall fin, though? From a practical point of view I'd cut it down and add a ventral fin (part), too?

Definitely a Seaview vibe to it. I almost went that way but then the club challenge came up so I decided to get outrageous with it. It might get a deck and a four piece band. I just have to convert one guitar player to playing left handed. The tall fin actually plays into the Yellow Submarine's tall rudder. Not practical at all but oh well.

Here's a pic with two coats of white on it. I want a good base of white before trying the yellow shades.

The fin is about as tall as the sail which is silly in RW but this IS silly so I'm just going to run with it. If I ever take it to a show or exhibit maybe the corrup, ah, impressionable kids will get a kick out of it.

Yup and I can't remember where I first saw it, but it 's used in quite a few model magazine builds nowadays.

Red undercoat for green.  Or was it Green for Red?

Can't have a Yellow Submarine without the band! This will take some repainting and converting a fourth band member to a left handed guitar player. No prob!

All the parts are here and the decals printed so there is no excuse to not get on with this one. I finally mixed up the first color to go on. Sprayed it on carefully with the airbrush and it looks good so far. Just good old Testors in the square bottles and thinned with lacquer thinner. It went on well and looks good so far.
Might be a little too dark but the yellow will brighten it up.

I used Frog tape for the masking and it worked great! No bleeding under and easy to use. It pulled off easily too. Looks like this is my new go to masking tape.

Oh I like that!

I have fantasies about doing the opposite, i.e. taking the actual Yellow Submarine kit and giving it a "grimly realistic" makeover. Given the ridiculous collectors' prices they go for though, that's never likely to happen. My guess is that many of them are sitting unbuilt in the collections of completist Beatles fans rather than modeller's stashes.

If you had gone for the Seaview look, you could have left the Victor's windows clear and replaced the pointy nose with a scaleorama's car headlamp.

I saw the pink-under-yellow tip on Twitter and promoted it on here, but I dare say I wasn't the first.

Another oddball undercoat is to pre-shade flesh tones with a thin green wash over white undercoat, then apply thinned flesh tones over it. Real flesh is translucent and the contrasty green gives the illusion of structure under the surface. I picked that one up from fantasy artist Patrick Woodroffe (RIP) and he got it from restorers working on paintings by the Old Masters.

How recently is "recently"?  I can't see any for sale in the UK.

The kit's been issued by both MPC and AMT/ERTL at various times.

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/52684095560_83ac90761b_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2ogvL8b)

I need to get on with this as next Saturday is the club's "Get out of your comfort zone" challenge reveal.  Decals, touch ups, mount on the base and assembly the band.
At least it doesn't look like this thing.

And you Aussies thought you had all the strange animals! Commonlly known as the Tully monster, it's the Illinois state fossile. Its only found in the Mazon Creek Lagerstätte which is only about 30 miles from my house. A very interesting place if you're into palentology.

I rememeber the re-pop in the tin can. It was stupidly expensive when it was out, and most of them went straight into the Beatles memorabilia market rather than through model shops.

Still working on reconfiguring Paul's arms. George is finished painting as he has the simplest costume. John and Ringo need stripes but I don't know how that will work. It would be hard enough in 1/35th but HO scale? I managed a fairly decent bass for Paul plus microphones for everyone. I need some shade of purple for Paul's jacket.
