I am now starting a new, unplanned project, which has a special meaning to me.
Last week, my father died unexpectedly after a short and serious illness. Because of him, I started my interest in naval history as a kid and we built my first scale models together.
He only did build a few models, but his "masterpiece" was a 1:350 RC Tirpitz based on a Tamiya kit, made about 35-40 years ago.
When checking his belongings, I found an unfinished model of the Steamer "Goethe", he bought and started to build in the early 1990s. I now want to build this one as a "mild WhatIf", so only a few changes and rename it to "Alter Zausel" (Old Zausel) as this was the nickname he gave himself in the last years.
So this is the box of the model, its in 1/160 scale and 50 cm long. As this is N-gauge for model trains, i should be able to get some nice figures for it.
Inside the box, only a few parts were built so far. And I doubt that the paint is still good (will use Aqua color anyway).
As I will make this besides my other projects, it will take some time, but I want to make this as a memory to the Old Zausel.
I feel for you mate. It must be hard.
Sorry to hear about the loss of your father, mate! :(
My father died a bit over 30 years ago, now, & you get used to it, eventually, but I still miss him from time to time.
Completing his Goethe is a great tribute!
What a wonderful idea, well done.
Good to see your Engineer is on the case too.
Oof, I'm sorry to hear about your father. My Dad is an avid N-scale modeler, and got me into 1/144 scale modeling. I'm going to have quite the collection of 1/144 when he passes away. Anywho, there are several German manufacturers of figures in that scale, many pre-painted.
Thank you all for your words.
I know this is the normal way of life, but still as its very fresh, its not so easy right now. But building something brings me into other thoughts. And of course I there is the help pf my engineer and his friends (I think I never mentioned that there are a lot of them hanging around here....)
I also have a N-gauge railway, so I think I still have some figures left, but there should be enough options to find some more.
A fine memorial!

My dad died 30 years ago this May rather unexpectedly and I could not of put it better. A wonderful tribute
My condolences and prayers for your loss. I hope the build tribute helps. Lost my Dad just a year ago and it still hurts sometimes.
My father only build the paddle wheels of the ship so far - which were the first steps in the instructions. As I need to get some paint (it uses some colors I normally do not use), I started to paint the paddle wheels:
Btw, the original ship, build in 1913 is still in use as a tourist ship on the Rhine river. In 2008/2009 the original steam engine was replaced by two diesel engines and additional bow and stern thrusters were added.
Hmm, somehow I underestimated the size of this ship. Will be a challenge to find a place for it once it is completed.
But now some first colors have arrived.

Working a bit on the main deck

A challenge?
Perhaps, but one I'm sure you'll overcome!
PS: It's almost the perfect size for a kayak for your engineer! ;)

Nah, sculls are a bit longer & narrower (ex-rower). ;)
It's a heavyweight scull, for engineers with HUGE brains, as Nonobar's surely has. ;D

Ah right. I've rowed a boat (around Crystal Palace Park lake) but never been in a scull. Always enjoyed watching them in the Olympics though.
I talked with my engineer and it looks as if she is not so happy about the idea of making a kayak from this model. Rowing is not her thing.
So maybe build something to use the paddle wheels?
Some work has now been done on the main deck and the first parts of the superstructure. Although I am building model for many years now, the instructions of this models are a bit confusing to me, its not really that clear how the parts should be installed there. But we will see....
Only slow progress this week, but my engineer is still very motivated on this project. Started to paint a few more things.
My engineer was busy with some other things this week, so only slow progress. Still working on painting the hull, this has to be done before the deck can be added.
Painting of the hull continues, looks quite bad WIP right now. But my engineer seems to be satisfied
(https://www.german-navy.de/web/ScaleModels/ScaleModel2022040309313.jpg)
The model is in 1/160 scale, this is N-gauge scale of model trains. So you get some figures for it. Which is good. Now got a cheap pack of 100 sitting passenger, they should be added inside the ship where they will be visible, but not too good. Makes no sense to spend a lot of money on the very pricey, nicer figures.
But the problem is, they do not fit on the benches and seats, as they are too small.
So I have to think of making some 3D printed replacements that have a bit more space.
The tables and seats are even worse, as everything is molded together. Have to make some replacements as well.

The issue here may be quickly minimised, if not fixed, by cutting away the bench seats
down through the base & replacing the tables with rectangles of flat styrene on a couple of styrene rod legs.
@Old Wombat: First experiments with some new, 3d printed parts looks good. A bit fine tuning is required, but it looks as if I can get a workable solution here.
Good point! You do 3D printing! :banghead:
3D printing is not my mental go-to, as I don't do it & doubt I ever will.

Well, your idea gave me something to improve my current design. Will have to do a new print later today.
The hull is now completely painted and the deck and paddle wheels are finally added.
(http:s//www.german-navy.de/web/ScaleModels/PXL_20220416_155111166.MP.jpg)
My engineer is now working on the support structure below the deck, a lot of tiny struts have to be added. A few are still missing.
About the internal tables and seats. Old Wombat gave me some idea and so I reworked my 3D model and printed it.
In the front, the original one that was too tight for the little people, in the back the printed one, fits much better.
Also made a new 3D print for the other table/seats part, this time with real seats. The new printed one in the front, the original in the back.
Sure, I now have less tables and seats with the new parts, but at least the dimensions are better.

Neat paintwork
The mass-production of tables and seats has been started, but sill more need to be printed.
First parts of the superstructure on the main deck added.
Now adding all the windows in there.

Nice work on the ship, there.
And condolences for your Father.
Mine went back in 1980, but I still find myself looking to share things or wishing I'd listened a bit more when he was trying to teach me something...
More work on the superstructure, while I am still printing and painting more seats and tables.
Also added the first windows, I fear you won't be able so see much of the interior once all decks are added. So its ok to get those cheap, simple figures, to put them inside.
A few smaller details added.

Work now continues at the box section

Many parts are already prepared but need to be assembled
(https://www.german-navy.de/web/ScaleModels/ScaleModel2022050809441.jpg)
My engineer had to help me on a real-life 1:1 scale non-WhatIf project (refurbishing of the roof terrace), but at least, the bow section is more complete now:

Box section is now done, and my engineer wants to ring the bell all the time.
Now starting with the interior on the main deck: Adding the 3D printed seats and tables and put the little people in there. Made a test with the upper deck added - you will not see much what is inside once everything is put together.

The upper deck is now in place and my engineer had some drama again. Then trying to add the stairs to the main deck, they fell into the already closed part of the ship, so a bigger hole had to be made to get those stairs out angina. Luckily, this hole will not be visible later.
At least the little passengers on the main deck are visible a bit.

Going along well.
And even though you may not be able to see details, there are still shapes and splashes of colour inside, so that adds a bit of visual interest.
Currently working one a real-life 1:1 scale project where I need the help of my engineer. The project contains painting a lot, so my engineer took the brushed use for scale modeling and started to paint. Will need a bit more time this way.
Therefore, progress on the "Old Zausel" is only slow, but s bit more work is done now.
In the meantime, some more figures for the ship arrived, this time much better quality (but much more expensive) as those inside the ship.
The old Zausel will be one of those here:
And more passenger, but they have to be painted.
Progress is progress
and good progress is the best kind  and still looking good.

Slow and steady batch painting is the way. Go through and paint all the faces and hands (and any bare legs), then all the shirts, then all the trousers/skirts, then all the shoes...
But vary the colours (especially skin and hair). You'll be able to get away with just wiping the brush between colours as it won't matter if they are not accurate due to a little mixing.
At least that's the way i'd do it.

This is more or less how I am doing it. Unfortunately, my "real-life 1:1 scale project" takes up too much time right now, so I only can proceed slowly for the ship. But there is some slow progress :)
This is special. And on the special ones you need to give them the time they deserve.
The top deck is now also filled with seats, tables and passengers, but i will add a few of the newly painted "good" figures in the part of the back of the ship before closing it.
Those are the painted figures so far. The Old Zausel himself is below the 1 cent coin. For comparison, right of the coin is one of those cheap Chinese made figures i used inside, the others are much more detailed. And more are still under construction.
Talking about the Old Zausel: I found another unfinished model in my fathers house. Its a paper model of the old German Battleship "Schleswig Holstein". I know he started it in the early 1980s, but never completed it. However, the set still seems to be complete. I made a few paper models as a teenager, and this was not my thing. So i don not know if I should build it.
There is another paper ship that was not started, the "Berlin", a passenger ship of the 1950s or 1960s. Must be also from the early 1980s.
Some of those paper models are incredible
You could use the paper kits as templates for scratch-building styrene versions. ;)

In the meantime, several smaller parts are prepared to be installed.

After my engineer survived his COVID infection - which is no fun for a bear - she added another week of vacation and is now back to continue the work on the Old Zausel.
All passengers are now on board

First decals have been added

As I have to make some own decals with the name on it, I wonder which font I should use for it

Agreed!
My more formal personal aesthetic proposes either of the lower two on the right or the informal aesthetic recommends the top left, for the ship's name font. ;)
The "Old Zausel" now has its name "Alter Zausel" as it is said in German:

And the Old Zausel himself is in command!

A few more little things to be completed then it is done.

Next week my engineer and I will go on a short river cruise. This was was a gift to the Old Zausel, but, well, things did not work out as planned. So the family will do this as a memorial journey.

On the river cruise that was our Old Zausel memorial journey, we had a stop in Rotterdam.
There, I saw this ship in the harbor:

Looks a lot like the "Old Zausel", so I had to to do some research. The ship, the "De Majesteit" is more a less a successor of the "Goethe", which actually is the base model for the "Old Zausel". The "De Majesteit" was build about 10 years later and originally was used by the same shipping company. Good to see it there!

Fate all came together
