Title: Curtiss TC512 Destroyer
Post by: Wardukw on October 19, 2021, 06:27:57 PM
Hey ya guys ...first time ive posted in the aircraft section so here we go .
I bloody good friend of mine gave me this dinosaur aged model from Monogram of a Curtiss Helldiver ...working with this model was to say the least interesting and surprisingly it turned into a bit of a challenge .I
was using my Dremel to clean up some joins where the tail planes meet the side of the plane ,,and then BANG,,,the plastic shattered ,,tail plane went into the god knows where cause i still haven't found it and the tail its self was laying on the floor..now to give you guys some idea of what i was working with here ,,this kit is either from 1961 or 1966 ,, so the plastic is brittle as hell ,,,most normal people would have binned it but we're not normal that why we are here ,,so the mind just started to play and this is the result ..
What follows is a heap of pics from start to finish ,,this is a first for me too..never dumped to whole build from start to finish  ;D

Now this plane is built from a random pile of crap and the remains of the worst  built and total waste of a Tamiya 48th scale Lancaster bomber...i was giving this plane and a small box of parts ..mixed up 48th and 72nd parts ,,i used what i thought would work and look not only cool and functional and apart from this thing looking ugly as hell i think its kinda looks the part of a heavily armoured and armed ground attack fighter ,,the props are 2 of the Lancasters put together and its spinners ,,why ?..no idea at all,,i was wanting counter rotating propellers but i would have to make the new set of blades backwards so i stuck with these..yep its different but this is what this channel is all about.
Now the finished model .....

Now even tho i havent told you guys this before but this is the first plane i have built in over ten yrs and those of you who do know me know i build armour,,so to me this dont look to bad for a guy who dont do planes  ;D
So please enjoy this mutant ..oh if the decals look a little strange that because most are for tanks ,,only the stars are for a plane  <_<
Cheers
Phill

Good save! And nicely weird and wonderful.

I get a sort of 'Sky Crawlers' vibe, which isn't a bad thing at all...

;D Thanks guys....yeah ugly is kind of a understatement for this thing ..the biggest problem was the lack of plane parts..i had an idea of what i wanted the cannon barrels to look like but no 35th scale barrel looks like that..so i got bored and started to pull this dead Bic lighter to bits and bugger me side ways one of the bits i pulled out was the gas tube which is where the flame comes from .
Well it looked like a cannon barrel to me so the hunt was on for 3 more..which i found and that spurred me on then..the guns are sorted.
Its amazing when you just need that little bit of luck to get the brain to fire and then the ideas just flow..freakin love that 🤗

That's as ugly as an Orc's butt - and looks weirdly effective!  Nice build!

I particularly like the shark's mouth - viewed from the front, the teeth are visible, and with most aircraft they aren't, only from the side.  Is that decal from the the Korean War Patton tank, or the WWII Sherman?  :)

;D Thanks guys..glad you like this mutant pile of bits .
I'll admit i did enjoy building this which is leading to a problem ..i kinda want to build another one or two..they will have to be 48th due to my lack of space even tho i would be happier if it was 32nd..least 48th can be cheaper i hope
I need to get a Me109..couple of Spitfires and no Tamiya ones..to expensive and to good to cut to bits..oh i be looking for a P40 at some point too.
Scotaidh mate your damn near right there..the decal is from a ancient Tamiya M48 Patton that i had yrs ago.
This is all Old Wombats  fault
One plane i want to build will require 2 P47's and 1 P38..that could be expensive   :-\

I'll accept the blame for this but there's no way you're getting my P-38 or P-47. No way! ;D

Cheers mate   ;D ..i dont do planes but because of this one i want to build a couple more dang nab it!!!
That bloody Australian Old Wombat has alot to answer for
Ok cause of Guy i am next going to build a Mistel in 32nd and its going to be a slight wiffy because it will be a 109 on a JU 88 ..i dont think the Germans made the combination..normally it a FW 190 ive seen on the 88.
Hahahaha Guy ya bugger ..no mate i wouldnt even think of doing that to ya 😂
Ill admit one thing tho..48th P38's are not that easy to find now..Monograms one was pretty cool ..i had the night fighter verison many yrs ago.

There drawings on devient art I believe and probably others with fantasy fighters like this. Although you have out done them this time! The Corsair seems to be a favorite place to start. Although the X wing made of A-10 parts is pretty cool if you find it.

There is also the WW2 version of the Colonial Viper made with P-40 parts. At least there is artwork, I don't recall if anyone has built it.

Not so, the 109 was seen frequently as the 'top storey'

I'm pretty sure there is a kit out there somewhere - I know Fantastic Plastic have done the F-86H based one.

Found it!

Well Rick then it wont be much of a wiffy then
I cant say ive ever seen a 109 on a 88 ..i do remember seeing a 109 on top of a ME110 in a pic a long time ago..no idea when or where tho.
I have a great affection for the JU88..its like such a wonferful layout..its a pleasure to look at..ya know it looks just right and i do not like the thought that the Germans were so desperate to waste em like that...its like watching at MBT being cut up for scrap..  its needed for the scrap but still seems a waste to me.
One thing that i cant figure out is way is there GAU19 .50 rotory fun on top of that A10 X wing ??..thats a crew served weapon   :o

Plenty of Bf-109's as the upper element of the Mistel combination, a quick google image search shows a few.

The Destroyer looks like a flying tank, so you haven't really strayed far from armor!

As i was saying to Old Wombat aka Guy i will kinda turn it into a flying tank because its the one thing i really do know well ..oh apart from the stars and bars every other decal on that thing is from tank decal sheets..ive got crap loads of decals for armour ..bugger all for aircraft so had to sort out that problem  ;D
Like what ive been playing with is my 32nd scale Mistel..its coming along and thanks to you guys like Gondor and Rick my wiffy aint as much a wiffy as i hoped..its a slight wiffy  <_<
Instead of a Gustav 109 the one im is a Amil 109..so a slight wiffy.
