Post by: wacek85 on October 15, 2021, 05:14:44 AM
1/72 Horten Ho-229 from Revell. Wonderful model, everything fits like a dream. Paining like always: Tamiya, Mr Hobby and AK Real Colors. Weathering with Tamiya pigments and AMMO fluids.

Nice one. I always wondered why this plane had such a massive nose wheel compared with the "main" wheels...

You and me both!

But no-one has come up with a definitive answer as yet, the most plausible being that it came from another aircraft, and was large in order to give the wing a steep angle of attack to assist the take-off.

The Zoukei Mura website says;

The Flying Wing, which cannot be equipped with high lift device, has a landing speed that tends to be high, and has to land keeping its horizontal line as it is difficult for it to land with a high angle. This means that the landing depends exclusively on the front wheel. Ho 229 V3 is equipped with robust struts and a huge front wheel that can withstand this shock.
