Title: F-36 KingSnake 1/48 (FINISHED PICS ON PAGE 2)
Post by: ssdunkel@me.com on June 05, 2021, 12:21:53 PM
Ok, so I don't really like the name, but I LOVE the idea of the F-36 KingSnake. A "non-LO" 4+ generation platform... SEXY!!!

Here's my interpretation of this potential mount, for the USAF, in 1/48, based on the F-16XL...

My model is based on some renderings I found online and is a conglomeration of the Skunk Models F-16XL and the Trumpeter J-10B. She will be finished in HAVE GLASS V dark gray, with AMRAAM's and AIM-9X's, likely with a couple of JDAM's for good measure...

Some other changes I've made: I added some moving SU-57 style "canards" up front and an F135 P&W motor, along with an IRST and some "lumps & bumps" to make her look interesting...

Let me know what you all think!

Ah! Been there, done that!  ;D

I'm obviously just joking but seriously, and this has nothing to do with your build, the F-36 Kingsnake's designers didn't come up with any revolutionary ideas. Lots of people had thought of something at least similar long before they came up with that.
The ventral strakes seem unnecessary with the twin tails or even with a single tail for that matter. Even the real XL didn't need them. Also, the real DSI intake tested on the Viper looked much better to my eyes and that canopy... :o And i don't think this would be a naval design.

Regarding your build, that's looking good indeed, i like the Su-57 influence on those "canards".

Here, also:

I figured that if I arranged the stabilizers a la F-18 (aft of the wing), they'd generate a bit of lift at banking angles, whereas putting them on the wing would result in the wing "blanking" the stabilizer, resulting in buffet and loss of directional authority.  'Course, putting the canards where I did was probably not helpful, aerodynamically speaking.  I probably should have extended the fuselage or truncated the forward wing-area ... and I wasn't willing to mess with either the Center of Gravity or the Center of Lift.  :)

I do like your build - seems a more likely development than mine.  :)

I added some moving SU-57 style "canards" up front

FWIW, the Su-57 "canards" are LEVCONs (Leading Edge Vortex Controllers)

Did you custom make the vertical tails or modify them from other sets?
Title: Re: F-36 KingSnake 1/48
Post by: ssdunkel@me.com on June 21, 2021, 01:49:14 PM
The vertical tails are actually horizontal stabilizers from a 1/72 RA-5C Vigilante. They are an almost exact shape match, from the pics.

It's been fascinating watching what you have done with the Kingsnake, although I confess, the Zwilling was a step too far for me! I have been genuinely surprised at the interest the article and my artwork has created and hats off for the beautiful build.

Thanks, but I can only claim to have created the artwork. The actual concept belongs to a couple of very talented aerospace designers who put a great deal of thought inot the configuration. Being a part of that process was quite an eye opener on how to balance the inevitable compromises of mission, capability and achievabiity.
