Title: Mc Donald Phantom 5 (finished page 3)
Post by: Tophe on April 06, 2020, 05:15:09 AM
As I did with the Tornado becoming Tornanard, my Mc Donnell F-4E Phantom 2 (Academy 1/144, ordered yesterday) will become a very small canard single-seater with maybe rocket engines (or very very short turbojets, depending on the possibility not to include air intakes)... <_<

There was only 1 in stock remaining, I hope this will not be cancelled checking the actual stock... :-\

Yes: at the end, with mirror copy, the zwilling version will have a double nose like Buck Roger's craft

I have been informed that the parcel has been sent to me. So... if the virus permits the postman to deliver it, the Phantom 5 will become true (plastic but true)... ;D

News! I received an E-mail: "Are you satisfied with this product? in case you have not received it yet, wait"
So: not immediately, but the parcel is clearly on its way... :-\ ;)

The 4th of April (Greenwich time) I ordered an ink cartridge (to print the schoolwork of my son at home) then the Phantom model for myself. And today I received the ink cartridge ! So :
1/ The postman is not dead, not even in the hospital
2/ I will probably receive very soon the Phantom model...

Drawing the turbojet-version top view, it seemed I cannot shorten the F-4 as much as I wanted.
But, adding the air intake on the profile, I see a possibility: shortening as I wanted while cutting away the wing-fuselage junction to reduce chord (and span, sorry PR19_Kit):  :-\ ;D

Obviously, there is not enough plastic under the jet intakes for my "rocket" considered way, so this will be a turbojet little plane: <_<

First drops of glue (and removing the fin from its very rear position): <_<

Now, before truncating the rear, I wait the glue to dry. Next step tomorrow. <_<

Wih that layout, you could have two jet engines and a single rocket above and in-between them... because with 40% less airframe weight, it's obviously still not fast enough... ;)

Another idea: instead of refitting the tail fin, cut the outer wing panels off and re-mount them vertically as twin, wingtip fins. That way you don't have to lose the back cockpit and you can give all your freinds and/or sponsors joyrides.

Speaking of sponsors, why not make it a racing plane? There was a real-life project to start a rocket-plane racing league: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rocket_Racing_League

Thanks for these good ideas! ;D
- Uh, I fear I have no 3rd jet exhaust 1/144, I will check my spare box, but the idea is very interesting.
- Reducing again the span to have wingtip fins is pleasant for me (sorry PR19_Kit), while I imagine that + central fin (not as a replacement of the central fin).
- Yes my Phantom 5 will be civilian and maybe racer but I will not buy special paint for that, it will be sky blue with the remaining paint I have.

Rocket exhausts for use 'low' in the atmosphere (that's 'low' by space rocket standards) don't need big nozzles Tophe. You only need those huge bell nozzles where the atmosphere is thin or non-existent. If you look at the rocket nozzles on real rocket planes like the SR.53 or the Trident, they're really quite small.

Post by: Tophe on April 26, 2020, 08:12:05 AM
Thanks, I think you are right: painting a black circle in the free space, central above the turbojet exhausts, could do it, very simply.
Thanks again! ;)

- The rear hole is now filled with putty, a little sanding is simply required before gluing the jet exhausts.
- I have added putty also on the air intakes, as they were not clean, it seems I have been misdirected by the instructions putting upside down the 2 panels under the air intakes, making all imperfect there. :-\ With putty and sanding (and what-if spirit) it is going to work anyway.
- Following Weaver's suggestion, I have truncated the wingtips and I plan to add tanks at the new wing tips, holding the extra fins there: <_<

Title: Re: Mc Donald Phantom 5
Post by: Tophe on April 30, 2020, 10:02:50 PM
hehe... ;D
My hands are rather normal: in the lab I was working for, we had plastic protective gloves in 4 "normal" sizes: from S (for my small colleague Maryse) to XL (for my tall colleague Julien), and I was using M in the middle then L later (after growing fat due to medicines). So my hands are not very big, so this Phantom 5 model is tiny, yes ;D

Thanks!

For the export market, it is famous that France had refused the Phantom 2 and refused also the Phantom 5, but USSR ordered 5,000 copies of the Phantom 5 (alas no approval from the US Congress). At last, France (with the influence of General Tophe Sr) ordered 100 copies of Twin-Phantom 5 (see below), used till 2012:

Your approval makes me decide my next model will be another modern (cheap 1/144) jetplane turned short. This will probably be the Chinese J-8 II of Academy (MiG-21 with a MiG-23 nose). To be confirmed, in July maybe.
