in 1965, BAC proposed a double-decker version of the VC-10. This would mate a new fuselage with the Super VC-10 wing and tail unit, and RB.178 Super Conway engines of 27,500 lb thrust. Capacity would be 265-286 seats.
The new fuselage would have as much commonality with the VC-10 as possible, e.g. the fuselage sides of the lower bubble would be identical to the VC-10 ones.
This version would have had better economics than the VC-10 (the wing which was overkill for the VC-10 came into its own here).

Oh, you bet I'm keeping my eye on this one. I love it already. What's the size of this baby?
Fuselage length is 37 cm. Scale 1/144.
Curiously enough, a few days I ago I was comparing the VC-10 with the 757 and 767. It actually comes in marginally heavier than the original 767-200 ( 147 versus 136 tonnes MTOW ) but has about 80 sq ft less wing area than the 767. Aspect ratio is also lower for the VC-10, 7.4 versus 8.0.
And even the 707-320 only had 40 sq ft less than the VC-10. I do wonder sometimes if the hot and high 'compromises' are exaggerated in order to cover for the fact that it just couldn't compete with the Boeing marketing machine.
.
Oh........my............God...........Hobbes. This is a real frankenstein project! It's going to be lots of PSR....But it sure will pay off. Can't wait to see it finished...
This has got to be done in 1/72
What brand of putty are you using?
I will buy some shares of the society. ;D
TWO Roden Super VC10s? :o
You must have a very friendly bank manager.......... ;D ;)
That looks a pretty complex build, best of luck with it.
Good Lord!! This looks nutty, I love it.
Looking forward to this

I've more or less finished this (and I got it done in time for Telford). There are a few items I still need to sort out (the decals need repairs).

Another set of RB.178 engines (same basic design I used for the Jet Belfast, now in side-by-side configuration):

Next to a standard VC-10 (the RB.211 test bed G-AXLR, based on the Airfix kit), you can see it's much longer. If you look back at the photos at the start of this thread, I hacked up the Roden kit (which is a Super VC-10) and inserted 2 fuselage sections, totaling 17 windows.

nice double-deck model, congratulations!
Lovely! What a great model!

So is the lower level first, business, or cattle class?
And very impressive engineering.
It's a beauty!

Right on, dude!!!!!! 🔥🔥🔥🔥👌👍👏👏👏👏
Absolutely amazing Harro ----
Impressive! Shame the VC-10 didn't see more development. Definitely the prettiest (subsonic) jet airliner ever built. Nice work!
Wow, that's fantastic!
That's excellent!
On the other hand, it kinda makes me sad too..... :-\
Looks excellent Harro, lovely build and what a line up
So more VC10 projects next or maybe the 311 or something completely different ? !
Super work Harro
I wasn't aware of any of these projects so it's educational as well. Also sad that they didn't see the light of day :-\
Gobsmacked. Truly.
Double-bubble VC-10, very nice.
Superb
Gondor
Well done,
1/72 scale might be a bit tricky. Although the Heller/Airfix Boeing E-3 and the engines from a B-52 would create something along similar lines.

It's one of the reasons I enjoy reading 'Secret Projects' type books - so many projects that never got off the drawing board and are relatively unknown.

there are 2 1/72 VC-10 kits (Magna and Anigrand, IIRC), but you need 2 kits to make 1 Superb so that project would involve a bit of sticker shock.
I can scale the engines to 1/72 fairly easily.

No I can't see anything either Harro. All the pics in this thread have disappeared. But I think I know what it might be as I had a similar problem a while ago. For me it was the photo hosting website not having its security certificate renewed. I was able to get them to appear when I changed the settings here in my profile to accept the hosting site as unsecure. But that was before our big forum update, I think I'd better go check my posts to see if any of mine has disappeared again.
EDIT; It seems like the settings I change in 'My Profile' carried over to the updated forum.
That's odd. I switched my hosting to secure a while ago, today I updated the links in this topic to https thinking the images would be visible again, but no luck. Stranger still: my avatar uses the same hosting site and it is visible.
one for Paul then ---
I think I've found it: the image URL uses uppercase letters.
VC-10 Superb 1a.JPG
The new forum software converts this to lowercase.
VC-10 Superb 1a.jpg
which means the url is incorrect and the image is not found.
Changing case didn't help. The original filename contains spaces, which are stripped by the forum sw.
I tried to type the image url in lower case, but unfortunately still no pictures. Is there any other way for you to show us this great project?
This is annoying cause I've always loved the lines of the VC-10 and I'm very interested to see what this looks like .

Does this work? Looks ok in Preview
Gondor
EDIT: Looks as if it does. What I did was this.... opened a link that Hobbes had in one of his posts in a new tab, then Replyed to a post and used the "Insert Image" pictogram. I then copied the https info from the tab which had the picture and put that where the https was in the window that opened when I clicked on the "Insert Image" pictogram.
Ta Da, there they, perfect pictures!
Thanks
YES!! We have a picture ;D
I like what I'm seeing and now we need more ..bloody nice work Gondor mate..bloody nice work for sure
