Title: Yak 9 Dvoynoy: Finished pics pg 6
Post by: zenrat on March 22, 2017, 03:36:37 AM
Finished one for the GB so must be time to start another.  This time not a jet.

This is an interpretation of a dream I had some years back.  I did a sketch at the time which is prolly somewhere in my blog thread.

I am using Airfix Yak 9 parts.

Here's the starting pic (I glued the fuselage halves just before the pic, honest).
(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi70.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi82%2Fgavinmaillardet%2FPDRV%2FYak%25209%2FYak%25209_zpsnyqcq6v0.jpg&hash=6b922fee28afd7508f7722d2377b822919756ea3) (http://s70.photobucket.com/user/gavinmaillardet/media/PDRV/Yak%209/Yak%209_zpsnyqcq6v0.jpg.html)

And here is where I am today.

Does that make it a Yak-9 Double-D?

Hat! Coat! Gone! ;D

A Yak-9 DD actually existed, it was a long range escort version...  ;)

Cool idea - I am curious if the thing "works" without a fuselage extension. From my experience with such twins, just using two standard fuselages leaves the whole thing a bit too short, and then there's the landing gear issue. You can use just the outer wheels, OOB, but with inward-retracting layouts the stance will later be very wide and (IMHO) look pretty goofy.

Anyway, I like the concept, and the result should look very good.

двойня = Twin.

The round thing is the housing for a lift fan.
When I dreamed of this is was an FW190z.  However I only have one FW190 and this is a Soviet GB.
(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi70.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi82%2Fgavinmaillardet%2FDreamplane_zps1f5d30c1.jpeg&hash=cf076a665e1e286b6ce45d72e97cad66eebbdb08) (http://s70.photobucket.com/user/gavinmaillardet/media/Dreamplane_zps1f5d30c1.jpeg.html)
The idea is fan assisted STOL rather than VTOL.  Also a very low stall speed.

Perhaps Yakovlev developed the landing gear on the Yak 9д and later used it on the jet powered Yak 15Db?  ;D ;)

Days working on Yak without drawing blood - 1

Today I finished cutting out and bracing the top of the fan housing and cleaning up the second fuselage.
For a mould produced 4 years before I was born in 1963 it shows every decade of its age.  Flash, sinkage, loss of detail, raised detail and rivets the size of side plates.  Lovely.
The fuselages will still need a dab of filler but at least now they have vaguely decent shaped under nose intakes and more scale thickness edges to the ventral radiator (and the rear end of it opened up instead of being solid).
Reading the ideas column of my stash spreadsheet I see that I had pondered putting a turret on one fuselage.

I cut a chunk out of one of the fuselages today and inserted a section of tube to make a turret mount.  I'll be using a turret I found in my "glass" parts bag.  It has an Italian feel to it and is possibly from a Savoia Marchetti.  Single gun.
I also glued a wing to the other fuselage.
Not knowing what the "standard" arrangement was for this sort of thing i've put the turret on the left fuselage making it Right Hand Drive.

The only RW Zwilling that I know that had turrets was the He-111Z and that had two of everything. That means your Yak 9д IS the 'standard'.  ;D

Well, after the first day when I fitted a new blade and put a little of myself into the build...

Just a little trimming of wing root blanking plates today.

OK.  But in which fuselage did the pilot sit?  And if they had one in each, was it standard practice to have the senior pilot in one specific side?  What about in Twin Mustangs?
I suppose I could look this up but I am bone idle and i'm sure you know.

I don't know about the He-111Z, but in the Twin Mustang the Captain was in the port fuselage.

IIRC, the He 11Z had only one true cockpit - portside. But there was a co-pilot on the other side, too (actually more of a navigator) with a limited instrumentation and not full able to replace the pilot.

That plastic looks like the soft as a bar of soap plastic with the Airfix spitfire among others.  One swipe too much with the sanding stick and you find you just cut a foot or so scale wise into the structure! Careful indeed.  Neat idea!  Dave

...mainly because todays work consisted of smearing filler around the turret mounting.

As far as which side to put the pilot, I am happy with my decision.  If the US and Germany went for Left hand drive then it stands to reason that (like with cars) the correct side to drive from must be the Right. ;D

A bit of sanding followed by attaching the port wing (trimming required with the knife and no blood drawn!).
I then joined the two fuselages with a strut to which I glued the lift fan.
The structure between the two fuselages is going to be open rather than faired in aerofoil shape like in my drawing.
The tails will be joined by a horizontal stabiliser.

That was the plan but today i've glued the round fan housing directly to the wing roots in order to make the thing as narrow as possible.
There will be some fillets and bracing struts still though.

Double figures!

Carved away the excess plastic I used to fill the holes where the tail bosses were and id an initial sanding.
Attached the horizontal stabiliser which needs an elevator adding.
Thinking about a colour scheme.  Current front runner is a late war Soviet 2 tone grey camo over whatever they used on the underneath.  Light blue?

Touch ups finished.  Next I paint the wheel wells and cockpit interior and then clear and decals.  i should prolly look at fitting the turret into the turret hole somehow as well.
Also have to paint the lift engine and its cowling and all the other fiddley bits.

As for the bluey green ? I'm sure it was post war as I think it came about from some psychological research suggesting it had a calming effect ? And that doesn't sound like something they'd have done in WWII somehow.

I think it's not supposed to be calming the mind, but to make it easier on the eyes at operating altitude by reducing the contrast between cockpit and surrounding sky.

Lift engine and its cowling (first coat) painted today.
Also all 3 props and the seat.
Had look at the exhausts Airfix provide.  They really are rather crude.

Put a final wash coat of blue on the underside and she's ready for clearing tomorrow if its not too dank.

Completely forgot I had intended to clear her today.
It was a nice day as well.  I managed to clear a car body and even had some clear left over.
Lucky I didn't try to use it on this though as it was enamel thinned with GP thinners and that prolly wouldn't have played well with the acrylics.

Instead I continued building the turret. and cleared the props.

I can't do it Chris.
My OCD won't let me stop counting.
But there is a solution which will satisfy us both.

Anyhoo, yesterday I cleared the thing and then today I decalled it.
I also continued painting the fiddley bits.

More painting of fiddley bits.
Accidentally decapitated the pilot.
Here is a photo (of the current state of the plane, not of the decapitated pilot).

Comrade Wombatski, here in the People's Republic of Victoria we have the most advanced chiropractors known to man (and women - thank you Reg).  Of course we can rebuild him.
The Comrades at Airfix had positioned him in a reclined position showing, for westerners, an unusual understanding of how relaxed and laid back life is in a socialist workers paradise.  Following his adjustments the comrade pilot now gazes forwards (towards the glorious day) rather than upwards at a 45 degree angle.

Yet more painting of fiddley bits today.  Mostly turret framing.

I did cut myself today but it was on my tape measure while working on my current 1:1 RW project (the master bedroom - last room left to renovate and then I will have done the entire house).  The count does therefore not have to start again.

It'll all become clear when its finished Brad C.  Which won't be long.
All parts are painted apart from the canopy so I will start attaching the fiddly bits tomorrow.

Well, she's now standing on her legs which are shod with wheels and dressed with doors.
Canopy framing is painted.
Turret is completed (bearing a striking similarity to a certain type of Sci Fi robot).
I almost forgot the exhausts.

How can you tell politician is lying?

Yak 9 Dvoynoy
Designed by Vladimir Davroski of Kaledograd Dustbin Factory No. 12 the Yak 9 Dvoynoy (double) was built to meet a requirement for a strike aircraft capable of utilising extremely short fields.
(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4253/34835468193_05440494da_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/V5hT3z)Yak 9 Dvoynoy 12 (https://flic.kr/p/V5hT3z) by Fred Maillardet (https://www.flickr.com/photos/156376527@N06/), on Flickr
Davrovski achieved this by mounting a lift fan powered by an air-cooled Shevetsov radial engine between two otherwise standard Yak 9D fuselages.  While not generating sufficient thrust for a vertical take off the fan did produce enough lift to shorten its take off run by two thirds.
(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4266/35476045412_cb84f82e4c_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/W3U1ko)Yak 9 Dvoynoy 11 (https://flic.kr/p/W3U1ko) by Fred Maillardet (https://www.flickr.com/photos/156376527@N06/), on Flickr
The second prototype mounted a 23mm autocannon in a manned turret on the port fuselage.  It was intended that the reduced stall speed provided by the lift fan (in some accounts claimed to be "at the pace of a brisk walk") would enable the aircraft to loiter over battlefields while the gunner picked off targets at will.
(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4211/34835469583_1939a95496_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/V5hTsx)Yak 9 Dvoynoy 5 (https://flic.kr/p/V5hTsx) by Fred Maillardet (https://www.flickr.com/photos/156376527@N06/), on Flickr
Operational trials with four development aircraft showed that while the concept worked the lift engine was prone to overheating due to the fan not drawing enough air down through the cowling.  Davroski proposed an extended cowling with an engine driven cooling fan atop the engine but didn't get any further than preliminary sketches before the project was cancelled.
(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4286/35644473295_e9f4d763ab_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/WiMf5p)Yak 9 Dvoynoy 6 (https://flic.kr/p/WiMf5p) by Fred Maillardet (https://www.flickr.com/photos/156376527@N06/), on Flickr
The aircraft's lack of legs was the reason for cancellation.  The loss of a wing mounted tank from each fuselage plus the addition of a third engine meant that there simply wasn't enough fuel capacity.  Two aircraft had the lift engine and fan removed and replaced with a fuel holding aerofoil centre section but it was felt that this didn't provide any improvement over a conventional aircraft and so all were scrapped.

I dreamt this design.  OK, so in my dream it was a pair of FW190s but I didn't have a matching pair so I built if from Yaks.
Two Airfix 1/72 Yak 9Ds are joined by a ring cut from a flocking container and a scratchbuilt horizontal stabiliser.  The top of this fan housing was cut from styrene sheet and reinforcement was added on the underside.  At which point I realised it might have been easier to use a 1/12 motorcycle wheel...
Lift engine and nacelle are Matchbox 1/72 Westland Lysander.
Lift fan has cut down Airfix 1/72 Ford Trimotor blades on a hub cut from evergreen tube
Turret is from my clear parts box and may be Italian.  Whatever it was there were two identical versions on the sprue.
While needing a bit of PSR and having more flash than a pervert convention the Yaks went together surprisingly well given the age of the moulds (1963).  You could make a half decent build from one but as a minimum you'd need to add cockpit detail, decent exhausts and replace the wheels.
(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4151/35644474115_ff0b3323e2_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/WiMfjx)Yak 9 Dvoynoy 1 (https://flic.kr/p/WiMfjx) by Fred Maillardet (https://www.flickr.com/photos/156376527@N06/), on Flickr
When I dreamt this design there was another aircraft in the dream.  It was a Bf 110 with no tail, a rocket motor behind the cockpit and twin open trellis booms extending from the rear of the engine nacelles and supporting a horizontal stabiliser.  I'll build it one day when I get a suitable donor 110.  I have an Eduard kit but it's an extremely nice kit and I want to do it justice not hack it up.
I also want to build the lift fan FW 190 zwilling.  In my dream it had the ability to hover so it'll need a bigger fan (or maybe contra rotating fans to prevent the whole thing from rotating).  The fan was housed in an aerofoil section and didn't have an engine mounted on top so I'm going to have to figure out how to power it.  But that's for later.
