Title: Non-Scale EVA-05 Production Type (new pics from an old kit)
Post by: Dizzyfugu on July 25, 2016, 12:57:25 AM
Again, new pics from an older kit, probably built in the late Nineties when the Evangelion OVA went on air and created a big hype - and lots of merchandising.

It's not truly a whif, "only" science fiction. This weird object is a highly moveable non-scale kit from Bandai, with detachable wings and many additional parts (including two heads, several hands a huge, two-bladed sword-thing). The kit ist maybe 8" tall and has a wing span of 20". It was built OOB, and it went together very easily and well, because it is already one of the more modern mecha kits where the mould designhers put some though into the building and painting progress the modeler goes through. So, this one could be built in sub-assemblies that are easy to paint, before everything is finally put together (and can also be repaired easily, just in case...).

The paint job in pure white was tough, though, as well as the comic-like contrast lines and exact color boundaries. Actually, the figure can be built without painting it at all, but a paint finish just looks better. Most painting was done with white from the rattle can, dark grey for the wings' undersides and some manual detail painting. Most panel lines were created with a black in fineliner.

Another tricky part was and is taking pictures of this winged beast. Like the Destroid Monster, it is not a huge figure, but with a wing span of maybe 20" the EVA05 takes alot of background and depth. In my initial trials a couple of years ago I used a  DIN A3 background poster, and that was barely enough; this pic was also taken with an analogue pocket camera and an ISO 200 Fuji Film, scan from a paper print - not bad at all for the time I took it:

Now, a couple of years later, with more experience, better equipment and with A2 format backgorund posters, a new photo series:

As a side note, the figures of Rei and Asuka in the top picture are Revoltech action figures (~1:12, I think), which are great photo mannequins.

A late addition to the series, with some photo editing in the foreground:
