Title: STAR WARS Whifs
Post by: seadude on December 17, 2015, 11:43:00 AM
With STAR WARS The Force Awakens finally here, I've read and seen about people buying model after model of X-Wing fighters, First Order TIE fighters, and more, to build and display.
Viewing other people's SW models across the Internet got me to thinking:  Has anyone ever made any SW model whifs? If so, what vehicle did you use? Does anybody have any future plans to make any SW whifs?

I had started an MPC X-wing in SEAC with Clark AB tail codes many, many, many moons ago.  It was never finished, and suffered an ignominious fate.  I do, at some point, wish to return to it.  Preferably with a "real" scale and not the box scale offering

My first ever official whiff was an Airfix 'SandSpeeder' , inspired by Jags and Fins over Iraq back in the early '90s. Had hand-painted 'Jaws' art, when I could actually see properly ;D. My older brother may have a photo....I'll ask him.

But X wings, Tie Fighters, Corellian Transports etc are not Whifs they are RW...  :o

I would like to combine a Y wing with a US twin engined medium bomber (B25, B26 etc).  I would replace the Y wing's engines with the aircraft engines retaining the wings outboard of the nacelles.  The bomber dorsal turret would replace the R2 unit and the horizontal stabilisers would become canards.  The vertical tail could possibly be inverted and there may or may not be a tail gunner.
My plans have however been thwarted by a lack of a 1/72 Y wing cheap enough to butcher kit bash.

Just look into SF modeler forums - SW whifs are a rather frequent thing. Got one on my agenda, too, for more than 10 years, I think. Parts are there, but I cannot commit myself to it.

The vote for next years GB's will be around Easter next year. However there is nothing at all stopping you having your own Theme Build and indeed we have a section of the site for it.

Secondly aren't all Star Wars models Wif's ? Or is it that I have never ever understood Sci Fi properly ? I enjoy some of it, The Lensman and Skylark books in particular, but have never got deeply into it. The modelling is superb and I can appreciate that, some of my favs at Telford this year were Sci Fi

As for the new film ? I've decided to go and see it at the cinema as everyone I know who has seen it is raving about it

The time scale. A Group Build lasts for a definite time, and a Theme Build is infinite, it  never ends.

Not quite

A Theme Build can have a limited time span or it can be infinite, it depends on how those involved want to organise it. It's a very loose "group build" where those participating are free to play with the "rules" as much as they like unlike G.B.'s which have a firm set of rules agreed prior to the start. The site provides the area for you display your builds and then leave you to it. Dosen't have to win a vote, just needs sufficient participants to make it worthwhile.

I'm not sure mate, but it will be one of the choices in the next round of GB voting for the 2016/2017 season

Getting this topic back on track...........

I just had the idea of kitbashing an A-10 Warthog aircraft with a STAR WARS model. But I'm not sure what to use. Either an X-Wing or a Y-Wing fighter? Which would be preferable? I'm almost thinking Y-Wing since that craft is more of a close air support/bomber type craft and shares similarities with the A-10.

Go for the comedy vote and mix it with a Snowspeeder: that's the real close support type in Star Wars...

I did a Venator Star Destroyer conversion in 2012, for a group build in another forum (that focussed on this specific kit).

I have also TIE Interceptor conversion in the project pile, for many years, similar to The Chaos' TIE Defender VK 1 mentioned before. Never had the nerve to start it, though.

What if you take the A-10 nose and cockpit and attach it to the Y wing fuselage but with the Y wing engines mounted close together and high on the fuselage. Some sturdy looking wings to mount the weapons on.

Nah, the Empire just launched new Corvette type ships that resemble Japanese cars...  ;)

Oh, took a picture of it at the office parking lot. I had finished it the night before (late), and was taking it to the club meeting the next day. I'll need to get around to rebuilding my photo booth to take some proper pics, and I'm a lazy git anyway....

At least it's in focus.  Unlike most of my pics of blurry models in front of crisp, sharp exacto knife, glue & paint.
