What if instead of Sabres the JASDF had bought Daggers?

Prevented by Congress from exporting rocket and missile technology to Japan Convair equipped the weapons bay of the F-102 J with a "Gunbelly" holding a pair of 15mm rotary cannons and their corresponding ammunition.

The model.
Hasegawa F-102 with scratchbuilt gunbelly. Otherwise box stock.
Painted with silver car paint from a rattle can, airbrushed zero paints candies and Humbrol, Model master & Tamiya Enamels.
Decals are a combination of those from the kit (the stencils), Hasegawa Kawanishi N1K1, aftermarket pinstripes, AMT Double Dragster and home made.

Love the colour of the wing tips and tail fin. Beautiful plumage!
Gondor
Great stuff.
I love the 'gun belly' idea, where did the parts come from please?
Thanks Gondor. That's Candy Yellow with a fade of Candy Liquid Bronze along the leading edges.
The bronze turned out great.
Colorful!
Very shiney! Hinomaru look right on the Dagger.
Nice unit marking!
Glorious
 Nice!!
Love it!!!!
That looks beautiful!
Thanks folks. I felt like doing something colourful and shiny for a change.
Kit - the Gun belly parts are all evergreen styrene tube, sheet and strip (and filler - lots and lots of PSR on this one) apart from the guns themselves which are resin 1/35 mini gun barrels with the shrouds left off the ends.
I can believe the amount of PSR you had to do, a zillion years ago I tried to make a TF-102 from the Hasegawa kit and a ModelConversions nose, and trying to get the closed missile bay doors smooth defeated me in the end. Yours looks magnificent.
Thank you. This model is one of the reasons I named the company that built my combined Spitfire/Bf 109 "Pistophe sans Dingem"...
All Hasegawa had to do was include a closed bay doors piece. Mind you, the intakes didn't fit too well either.
. . . Now, I'd love to see a JASDF F-106J . . . Same squadron, same colors . . .
bobbo
That's damned pretty, and the colour scheme also reminds me perfectly of 1950s Japanese toys and sci-fi illustrations. Nice one!

Give Meng enough time to get their lovely Dagger into production and to ship some to Zenrat's part of Oz..... ;D
As stated elsewhere this was one half of a Hasegawa F102/F106 double pack so I do have a Dart in the stash.
The two aircraft look too similar to do it in an identical scheme (I have enough trouble remembering which one is which as it is) but a similar one featuring red or green candy could be on the cards when I restock those paints.
Maybe different flights from the same squadron (anyone know the Japanese for Goatsucker?) had different colour wingtips and tails?
How well do the Hasegawa F106 missile bay doors fit in the closed position?

Just as bad as the Two's do, IIRC it's the same moulding. :banghead:
It depends on how much "milliput" you use. :banghead:..................get the picture?
Shiny!
Thanks bruv.
And thanks Kit & Dork. I don't know if I can face that much PSR again so maybe the Dart will have the missile bay with something interesting in it. I do have some Japanese anti ship missiles in a Hasegawa set...
I've always been amazed none of the aftermarket people didn't offer a one piece replacement for those apologies for missile bay doors, but I guess they never will now, what with the advent of the superior Meng kit.
Nice work Fred that certainly does look right at home in those colours ! Makes sense to me.

Cost, $US10.00 from here - http://www.lonestarmodels.com/index.html - under 1/72 conversions.
He also offers a broad range of firebomber conversions, for those that might be interested.
Fire bomber Delta Dart, now there's and idea. Small tank but many trips in a short time...
Thanks Rickshaw, i'm off now to order one of them.
Bugger, minimum order $25 and nothing else takes my fancy. Oh well. Maybe later.
Coo stuff I'm off to check it out !
